    Default Frederick Brett help

Hi all. I am brand new at this. Seems like I must be missing something obvious. I found a death register of Frederick William Brett on A*****y.com Death registered in Hackney London Jan 2001. That entry said his birthday was 2 Aug 1952. Trouble is I cannot find any record of his birth other than what is listed on the death register. Can anyone tell me if I am missing something obvious?

The best I can find is a Frederick J Brett born in Grimsby (registered 4th Quarter) 1952. Should I assume it is the same person and there was a typographical error somewhere? There was a Frederick J Brett born in Hackney in 1928... a father perhaps???? I am told the person I am looking for was definitely English. I just can't find any other record of him.

    Please help.

He may have changed his surname - perhaps his mother remarried and he took his stepfathers name? Or maybe he was not given a name at registration, in which case you should look for a registration in the name of Male Brett. Maybe he just wasn't registered at all, which, though an offence, did happen sometimes.

Do you know of any brothers/sisters from which to find out the parents names?

    Hi Joag!

What other information have you got from his death cert? Did Frederick marry? If so, you could look for his marriage certificate. Who registered his death?

Not all records can be found on the internet, there are still some we can't track down! For this reason, we can't assume that the Frederick J you have found is the Frederick W you are loooking for. Mind you, whoever registered the death may not have know his correct name! For instance, my Great Grandma had a different maiden name on her death certificate than on her marriage record or children's birth records. Obviously the son who registered her death got it wrong!

It is wise not to assume anything in genealogy. It is all to easy to end up chasing the wrong family. Are there any members of your family researching him? maybe they could help. Are there any trees on a......Y that may be worth contacting the owner? Where do you think he may have come from? is he a family member? from Both Poleta and Rubina have thought of good examples of what may have happened and I cannot think of anything else to add to their ideas.

Thanks for everyone's input. I don't have the death cert yet, just the index. I know nothing else at all. No siblings, names, etc. I found two possible marriages, again unsure. I have no family to help as this is an adoption case. Since I cannot find a birth cert I have no way of knowing his mother's name. Suppose I just need to be patient and wait to get a copy of that certificate I really appreciate your input though!

That it was an adoption case may be your answer - he may have taken the surname of his adoptive parents. Your best bet is to wait till you get the death cert and see if it gives you any additional info, and take it from there.
