    Default Hello everyone

Hi, Have just come onto this forum as I am looking for ancestors of my Grandad, Ernald Frank Harris born in Feb 1917 in Ashbourne, who served the Royal navy & was based in Sri Lanka (former Ceylon). His rank was Sapper R.E & number was 1874058. Would be very grateful for any help on where to start my search.
    Best regards

    Jeremy

Hello & welcome to AA. Good luck with all your searches. Jeremy have you thought about getting his birth cert? This will give details of parents then you should hopefully find other records i.e - census details and other records.WW2 records are still not freely available. If you write to the MOD with evidence of who you are explaining what you are looking for they can probably help. But as far as I am aware this is fairly costly. I would think his birth cert is the first step.

Hello & thanks for the speedy reply.

Yes, I do have my Grandfather’s birth cert & it states his mother’s maiden name as Harris & no details about his father. Maybe he was born out of wedlock. Not sure.

Also I have my fathers birth cert which was registered in Ceylon as a birth occurring out of the UK which states my grandfathers rank & Rgl No along with my grandmothers (passed away) name. According to my grandmother after the war my Grandfather returned to UK & my grandmother decided to stay back with my father. They kept in touch for a while & all contact was lost after my father decided to leave when I was very little.

It would be nice to know if my Grandfather had siblings.
    Thanks again
    Best regards

    Hi Jeremy,

What is you grandfather's mother's name. You mentioned her being a Harris. Have you looked for a marriage for her which may lead to Ernald's half-siblings, if he had any.

    Thanks Mrsp,

Did not think of that. My Grandfather's mother's name is May Harris. On my Grandfather's birth cert it states her place of residence as Sutton. It looks something like broppec Sutton. Is there any site where I can view her birth & if any her marriage cert?

    Thanks

    Jeremy

Jeremy Hi, I did answer your thread on the link below..You have posted a couple of times in regards to your Grandfather and I asked some questions and posted some finds for you..To find out about your Great Grandmother you need to get a copy of her birth certificate.. All certificates need to be purchased through the GRO
(General Records Office)..Can you think of anything more that would help in regards to your Great Grandmother such as the year she was born, did she have a middle name, do you know where she died and how old she was?

Hi Harris. I was born in Sri Lanka & my grandad...

Just got some more info. Did a Google search on death notices & got a hit for Harris Ernald Frank with a year of death as 1997 in Derby, Derbyshire which is also his birth town. Also from what my mother states he sailed back from Ceylon on the 04th April 1946.

Could her place of residence be Upper Sutton? I suspect it might be an alternative name for Sutton-on-the-Hill which is Ashbourne.

    Jeremy Hi,
I will repost this information as you have made no mention of the finds in regards to the link I posted..You write your Great Grandmothers name was May but I wonder if it might have been Mary...Could she have used her maiden name for some reason when she registered your grandfather's birth?
