Hello Jenny. There is no Data on the Irish records. I did find your Grandmother on the 1861 census
Living with James Edwards Family. If you do not have the information I will put it on for you
Found their marriage 1859 in the Parish of St George Manchester. Do you know when Ellen moved from Ireland
to live in England. and if so, where did the family settle. Liverpool or Manchester. Maybe able to get
the information that way. By passage lists.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I only have the 1881 census where they were living on Rochdale road, Manchester.
I do not know when they arrived, I would love the info from 1861 census please.
Thanks so much

There are no passage lists/migration records for people who moved from Ireland to England in the 1800s. It was all one country and was just a local journey. So unfortunately you won’t trace the family origins that way.
I would get the 1859 marriage cert as that should give Ellen’s father’s name, and his occupation which occasionally helps narrow the search.
Statutory records of births, deaths & marriages started in Ireland on 1.1.1864 (1st April 1845 for Protestant and Non-Conformist marriages). Prior to that you are heavily dependant on church records, where they exist. (Some have been lost, some are incomplete and some are not yet on line). To use church records effectively, because there’s no centralised index, ideally you need to know the ancestor’s exact religion, townland and parish in Ireland. (Otherwise it’s a needle in a haystack). Good sources are poor law applications which can show town/townland or parish of origin. Census returns sometimes include place of birth. Check every possible census. Usually it will just say Ireland, but sometimes it gives a townland or parish name. Check old diaries, gravestones, family bibles, wills and obituaries. I assume she was RC. You can see what RC parish records survive in Mayo from the following site:
Roman Catholic records
Copies of the records are held by the National Library National Library of Ireland - Homepage It is also usually possible to order copies of the microfilmed records in to your nearest LDS library, for a small fee.

It seems that on 1861 Ellen's birthplace is given as Manchester Lancashire and only Joseph Hill, (James Edward Hill's father) is born Ireland. His wife Elizabeth is born in Canterbury Kent. As Bronson has said James Edward and Ellen and the children, Joseph 3, Ellen 1yr and Elizabeth 1mth are living with his parents at 95 Lees St. manchester. By 1871 they have their own home and Ellen who would now be 11 is not with them. James Hill, hairdresser, 30, wife Ellen 28, Joseph 12, Elizabeth 8 and John P Halligan nephew 6. All born Manchester Lancs.(all census info courtesy TNA)
There is a tree on An***** which has Ellen Costello born Mayo Ireland but no parents for her.
This might be her birth: Ellen Costello, Quarter 4 1842, Manchester 20 573 - it just about ties in with the details given in the 1871 census.
Poleta.
Please could you take a look at Joseph Hill born 1801 on 1841 census manchester,.
It seems he came from ireland and two/three of the children were born there but I cannot make out whether James Edward Hill was born there or not. It says No. I think but does that mean he was NOT born in Manchester?
I'm sorry Lola - I would with pleasure but I don't have a subscription to be able to.
Perhaps someone else?
Oh that's ok. I'll take another look .
They were living in Angel St. Manchester St. George.
Joeseph Hill 40 Born I
Elizabeth NO
Elizabeth daughter 13 born I
Susannah 10 born I
Michael 4 born I James Edward 1 N0,,,
so does that mean he was not born Manchester or is it a mistake?
(courtesy TNA..)
Well if you take it as read, it means he was not born in Lancashire at all, which does not fit with the 1861/71/81 censuses.
I'd be inclined to think it's a mistake.
There is a birth reg for James Edward Hill, Quarter 4 1839, Manchester 20 559 which could be him.
