Default Help in locating immigration records

My grandfather, Harris Sklar, after whom I am named, was born in 1864 in Latvia which at that time was part of Russia and moved with his wife to the UK in the late 1800's. In census records from Manchester he is listed as a cap maker He lived in Manchester with his family until 1892 when they moved to New York, USA. I have census reports from Manchester but have been unable to locate where the immigration and ship manifest records for his arrival in the UK may be and if they are available. Is there someone who can assist me in locating these records? My email address is . harrisjsklar at gmail dot com

    Harris,
Your e mail is still on view.
I looked at Alien arrivals on Ancestry but couldn't find him sorry but someone else more experienced than I will maybe know how to find it. can you think of another name he might have been called when he left Latvia?
On arrivals/immigration there is a Meyer Sklar from N York, born 1866 and arriving in Liverpool UK 6 jan 1896on the Teutonic . Aged 30. Cannot make out his job.
There is also a Private H Sklar arriving Liverpool from Philadephia Pa.on 1st Nov 1917.

Edit function not working so have to do another message!
Just thought you might be interested in case that Private H Sklar above is yours that he arrived in Liverpool on the NOrthbound. It was a steamship that was commissioned to carry hundreds of American soldiers, to the beaches of Normandy... stopping at Liverpool on the way. Can't help thinking of those who never made it home.

    Hi Lola,

Thanks for your reply. Interesting about Private H Sklar - not a relative I know of but I did travel to Normandy once and will never forget the beaches and what was faced. I am 77 and was too young to serve but have vivid memories of WWII. Has a cousin who served under Patton and was in The Battle of the Bulge.

I am unable to locate some census records I have from Manchester - recently moved and must have misplaced them but still looking. Harris was married to Toby Dermack and while living in Manchester they had three children, two of whom died in infancy and one know as Bessie here who came with them here to the US. It is possible tat they may have also lived at one period in the Ukraine before they came here. The ship they took to the US was the SS Wisconsin. I also have to locate the manifest and when I locate these Items I will send the information on to you.

    Hi Harris,
I have looked and looked but cannot find any Sklar that fits on 1881 or 1891. They may have been mistranscribed. They weren't in uk long then?
Do you think the name might have been SKLARS/ Sklarsky or even Sklarov in the Ukraine?
What about Bessie? Do you have a birth date for her? and what nationality was Harris' wife?
I will wait for you to find what info you have.

I have reason to believe that Solomon was a brother of Harris and I do know Amelia was a sister. The names Barnett and Joseph were mentioned in passing at times when I was a child. BTW, my father told me Amelia had a wonderful voice and went on the stage in NY. There is someone doing research on a group dancers to which she may have been a member. At the time the family immigrated to the US Latvia was a possession of Russia and I recall that on Harris' application for citizenship he named as the his country of origin "The Czar of Russia". I'll keep looking for the part of my file that has been misplaced and when I find it I send you more information. In the meantime, can you tell me where you were able to obtain the information on Solomon and the others.
    Thanks for all your assistance,
    Harris

    Hallo Harris,
I got the census from Ancestry .co.uk.
I have mislaid the bit of paper I wrote it on but from memory Barnett was about 21 and a carpenter as was his brother Marcus 19 also and Joseph 17(forgotten what he did).
Amelia must have been named for Solomon's sister.
I will do that census entry properly for you.
    Were they Sephardic Jews?
Will see what else I can find
