Thread: Alfred Stevens 1817

Hi, I'm Roger and I am reseaching my wifes Famly Tree. A famous name has been bandied around her family for 100+ years and that is the Sculptor, architect and painter Alfred Stevens. Born to George and Susan in Blandford, Dorset in 1817 and died in London 1875. Part of his life was in Sheffield 1850 - 1852. Amongst other items he created were sample firesurrounds and fenders. Some were of miniatures to carry and show prospective clients. some of which belonged within my wifes family (the Stevens side). Alfred does not to my knowledge have any relationship with my wifes family but she believes he does............. Does anyone know of any like between Alfred Stevens and the Stevens of Worksop, Notts late of Sheffield.

My wife mother was Jessie Stevens born Sheffield 1915
Her father was Arthur born Worksop, Notts. in 1879 moved to Sheffield

" " " Thomas " Papplewick in 1826c " " Worksop by 1861 A Blacksmith?
" " " Thomas " " in 1794 A Blacksmith

I do not think Alfred Stevens had any children, unless they were illegitimate. Therefore if he was an ancestor of the Stevens family you refer to it must have been a distant relationship, and further if he was born Dorset and the above Nott's it does at this stage of the investigations seem unlikely, however not impossible.

In 1871 Alfred was living at 9, Eton Villas, Hampstead, Middlesex. He is enumerated as unmarried and the only other person in the house is his Domestic Servant - Jane Coombs age 36. RG10; Piece: 194; Folio: 7; Page: 7 (Crown copyright, care of TNA).

20 May, The will of Alfred George Stevens late of 9, Eton Villas, Haverstock Hill, Middlesex, died 1st May 1875, at 9, Eton Villas, proved at the Principal Registry by Alfred Pegler of the town and County of Southampton Jeweller the sole executor.
