    Default Henry Tyrrell

I am having problems finding any info on my great grandfather. All I know is his full name was Henry Robert Alexandra Tyrrell he was married in Cardiff in 1905 when his age was given as 27, and fathers name of James (stone mason deceased). Nor can I find any James's who had a son Henry who ties up with my great grandfather.

In the 1911 census all the family (his wife and 3 sons) are present (except Henry) as living in Barry, South Wales, Alice his wife is shown as "married" suggesting Henry was still alive. However she re-married in 1917 and was listed as "widow". So using those two examples, Henry died between 1911 and 1917.

Henry was a "mariner" so may of been at sea during the 1911 census and may of even died at sea. But that does not explain why I can not find any record of his birth, death or that of his father James. This fact is holding up my research into this side of my family, which is of the most interest to me as it is the history of my surname.

Not sure what avenue to try next, any ideas?????

    Hi ! and Welcome,Jameswales,
Might your Henry be the one who is on 1901 census in st Mary Cardiff(RG13/4981) a ships cook , born in the West Indies?
He is aged 26 and in a lodging house with other seamen.

    I was looking for Tyrells.
No luck with finding a Henry Robert A Tyrell with father James but oddly did find a John Tyrell (a Private)aged 35 Born Norwich with wife and son ,John Henry, and two daughters at Alverstoke , Fort Brokenhurst Hants.(army barracks) 1881 census with my great grandfather and his family .
My grandfather was born in the West Indies so wonder if your James Tyrell was in the army/navy which might account for the fact that you cannot find HRA Tyrell's birth. Just a thought!

What were Henry and Alice's children(if any) called?

Thanks for that the ships cook/west indies could be worth me looking into.

Henry and Alice had 3 sons Alexandra, Frederick and William. All 3 sons and Alice appear in the 1911 census for Barry Docks, Sydenham Street.

On the wedding certificate for Henry and Alice, he has a Cardiff address (Clive Street), which is real close to St Mary Street in Cardiff (for the ships cook you found). Though that cook was 26 in 1901 (Henry would of been about 23 going by the age on the wedding certificate), then again as we all know do not trust census's etc for 100% accurate ages.

He does not appear on that census with Alice and the 3 sons. But Alice is down as "married", however on 23rd December 1917 she remarried and was now a "widow". So I take this to mean that Henry died between the 1911 census and 1917.

No results found on FMp for deaths at sea!
One death for the Great war.. HW Tyrell
One Tyrell taken prisoner of war... not HRA.
No results to search (deaths) on Free BMD
    So where did he die?
Somewhere abroad during the war? Ship torpedoed?(if he was the ships cook )
And if the 1901 in Cardiff IS him then he would have been in the war surely?
    Medals?

Do not know if it is the Henry Tyrrell I am after but a Henry Tyrrell in the crew lists for the following:

    1907- vessel Elizabeth Jane,,ship number 67966 port-Chester
    1907 as above
    1908 as above
    1911-vessel Minnie Coles..ship number 56134 port- Chester
    1912 as above.

Having done some research I have discovered Minnie Coles was torpedoed 19 November 1917. Again not sure if he is the Henry Tyrrell, or even if this Henry was still with Minnie Coles at the time it was sunk. The only thing is if he was killed when the Minnie Coles was torpedoed, this was only 5 weeks before Alice remarried, this makes me doubt things.

Also found a Henry Tyrrell onboard "New Blessing" just off Gravesend for the 1901 census, born Wicklow,Ireland, aged 20 (does not match in with the Henry I am after who was 27 at his marriage Feb 1905.
