    Default census forms

    Hello everyone

Can anyone shed some light on this slight problem I have come across.
On 1851 Census for a relation of mine, I read that place of birth is given as N H,
She was living at the time in Morley Derbyshire, but where or what is N H please

    Regards

    George

Hi George, could it possibly be NK, ie not known? 'H' and 'K' are common misread/mistranscribed letters.

If you are still unsure let us know the census details and we'll take a look for you, and don't forget we are here to help so anything you are stuck with or puzzled about please ask, we don't mind.

    Good afternoon Slizzy
Thank you for your kind offer and quick response, I tried to copy and paste but did not work,
The article can be seen in 1851 census
Eliza Pugh born 1826 she is shown as house servant at John Potter living in Morley Derbyshire
With a name of Pugh I think she could be Irish decent,
    Fingers crossed
    Regards
    George

    Hello George,

I see your difficulty, it does look like NH, however after studying the enumerator's handwriting I think it most likely NK (not known). The enumerator's K's are very similar to his H's, look at the last person on the sheet, William Hinds age 30, he was born in Kimberley and the K is very similar to the H in Hinds.

Have you been unable to find Eliza in 1841? Do you know anything else about her that would help in finding her in later census?

I hope your gardening is going well, and the rain kept off.

    Hi Slizzy
rain stopped play, fortunately managed to cut majority of the grass, half a hectare, it keeps me busy,
I did find an Eliza Pugh 1841 working in Derby, and I think somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember her
living in Warwickshire with an elder sister, This was on a computer that someone decided was too old and got rid,
Thats why I am this stage now, and lessons learned I have made a back up so far, maybe someone can check this
out, I see in later census s that she was showed as being born in Morley, but as many people of that period could not read or write she went along with what was said I suppose. Suns out now get things put away,

    Thanks again

    George

Did Eliza marry, if so to whom and when?

I don't envy you cutting a lawn that size, George, but I'm sure it keeps you fit!

    Hello George,

Eliza isn't easy to pin down in 1841, but I will do an intensive search later. On the 1861 census she says she was born in Birmingham, Wark's, but on 1871, 1881, 1891 she was entered as born in Derbyshire, very confusing and unhelpful.

I looked for possible baptisms in both Derbyshire and Wark's, I didn't find one in Derbyshire, but found this in Wark's.

Elizabeth Pugh, born 25th June 1827, baptised 27th Aug 1827 at Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England. Parents: John and Hannah
