Though I would try a new route on trying to find out about my gr grandfather, I have his marriage certificate, if I got in touch with the county offices would they be able to tell me where he was born

slizzy thanks for help, he was married on 3rd July 1885 his age was 24, he was married in stevenston ayrshire to annie wotherspoon, his father was John Spence, general merchant (dec.) in St. Vincent's and his mother Ann louisa Brown (dec.) witnesses were James Fyfe and Marion Thomson. His wife annie came from Beith in Ayrshire, but we don't know where Benjamin Spence came from
