Hi there, My grandfather was Frank Hindle Daniel born in Manchester in 1886. When he was a baby some children took him out in his pram, apparently somewhere near to Manchester City's ground in Maine Road, Moss Side. They took him out of the pram so that he could crawl round. His left knee was cut, the wound was infected and became gangrenous and as a result his left leg had to be amputated.
This is the family tale.......
As an adult he spotted a brass plate outside a house showing that this was the home and rooms of the surgeon who had amputated his leg (he must have been told this information by his parents) so he knocked on the door. He was invited in and shown a glass jar containing his leg ! Apparently this was the surgeons first amputation and he had kept the baby's leg.
What I don't know is who the surgeon was and is the story true and also is that leg in a museum somewhere. It would be interesting to find out.
Any ideas out there ?
Graham
