    Default finding my great grandfather

my grandfather Douglas Wastnedge was born in 1920 and on his birth certificate, the father is unknown. From what my mum says his father could have either been a captain of a submarine that sank in the Atlantic ocean in WW2 (1939-1945) or a professional golfer that played at the Dore and Totley golf club.
My grandfather went to the funeral of the golfer, from what my mum remembers.

    Genseeke Hi,

Do you have a copy of your Grandparents marriage Cert as there could be a Fathers name recorded and his profession if any would be stated?

Who were the two witnesses on the marriage cert and at what age did your Grandfather marry? 1939/1945 is twenty years plus after your Grandfather was born so unless his birth Mother kept that secret to herself I do believe your Grandfather must have known his birth Fathers name...If your Mother knows who the professional golfer was by name I wonder if he would have had any other children who might be able to help with this search..The reason I ask this question is the family of the Golfer might have heard some rumours about a son born out of wedlock..Maybe the Golfer was already married at the time when your Grandfather was born?

the witnesses to the marriage were R. Ball and what looks like E. Andrews, I know for a fact R. Ball was the wifes brother. The vicar was J. Lyth, my grandparents married 1946 in Wincobank, Yorkshire. Douglas married age 26 and Gladys was 28.
I have Douglas's sister birth certificate and no father is mentioned and her birth was eight years after Douglas's, so who knows if it was the same father or different.
From all what my mum as said to me over the years, that the family had some sort of connection to the gypsies, my great grandmother and her brother Stanley spoke romany to each other. So maybe the supposed father was a gypsy?
Winifred Mary Wastnedge was born 1898 and her brother Stanley was born in 1900, there were 5 children from that generation, the other one to live past infancy was George and he was born in 1907.
Those five children are a mystery cause on some of the birth certs there is a father mentioned and the others there is no father mentioned and I can not find a marriage for there mother, the supposed father was a William Wastnedge and his occupation was a traction engine driver.
The funeral of the golfer happened when my parents were or had just got married and my mum was not living at her parents house, and when she did asked about it, it was not talked about. I wish my grandfather was still around so I could ask him about all this.

Genseek, I am hoping one of our other members might be able to offer some more advice and help you further..Unless your Great Grandmother kept your Grandfathers birth Fathers name a secret I do believe your Grandfather would have known the name of his Father..I wonder who the other witness might have been..Can you add the certificates as an attachment for our members to look at in order to help you further with this one..

You mentioned about your Grandfather having a sister eight years younger so is your Mother in touch with any of her Aunts family? They might be able to offer some information? I try to leave no stone unturned when I am searching for information on one of my ancestors.
