Default Who was Joanna BOURKE? - (in Devon)

Joanna Bourke married Richard Craig Sep Q 1857 Plymouth

In 1861 her age was shown as 39 (b c 1822), born Brentor, Devon. In 1871 her place of birth was given as Lamerton, but as much of Brentor was, at that time, in Lamerton this is not inconsistent.

From 1881 and 1891 censuses, as Joanna Tregear, her year of birth is calculated as 1823 but her place of birth is still shown as Brentor/Lamerton. I have not been able to find her in 1841 or 1851. As she was 35 when she married Richard Craig it is possible that that was not her first marriage, but I have found no record that suggests a possible earlier union nor any death of a Mr Bourke that might indicate her widowhood. I am working on the assumption that it was unlikely that she moved far from West Devon but not totally ignoring the possibility that she spent part of her life further afield.

I am interested in a Joanna, born 1822, in Brentor/Lamerton who "disappears" after 1851 and I am considering the possibility that Joanna Bourke might be my girl, which is why I am anxious to identify her more conclusively, if possible without the expense of purchasing a copy marriage certificate.

I would greatly appreciate any possible "sightings" of her prior to 1857.

Thanks for your time and comments, Elaine.

I have seen the Burke/McCreet marriage and whilst I have not dismissed it out of hand, neither am I able immediately to identify any relevance.

As for certificates, I think the one for the marriage of Joanna Bourke/Richard Craig is likely to be more informative with, hopefully, the bride's father's name and possibly related witnesses.

okdoky you were never going to find Joanna searching on the census on her name - she has been transcribed wrong. In 1871 she had a son William. He was 13 so I knew I would find him in 1861 and I did ....In Nelson street Devon

Hi -By 1891 William had his own family and was married to Margaret living with the mother in law Mary Quick. So I would not mind betting Margaerts name before marriage was margaret Quick . They were in Devon .

Thanks for confirming the 1861 entry and for the additional information regarding William but my real sticking point is tracing Joanna before her marriage in 1857. Who/where was she?

    Thanks, Milford Lass.

I have Joanna Cowling's details and it is she that I am trying to trace. She has proved particularly evasive. Initially I thought she had died pre-1837 then I found her in 1851 living in Plymouth with her "sister" Elizabeth. Her age is shown as 23 when in fact she was 28 and Elizabeth was her niece. I'm not sure if this is a case of sloppy enumeration or if Joanna was being deliberately mis-leading. Back to 1841 and the closest I can get is an Anne Cowling 20, living Brentor. After exhaustive attempts to prove otherwise I now believe both these to refer to "my" Joanna. Her parents, Robert and Alice, migrated from Cornwall and to date all Cowlings I have discovered with Brentor, as opposed to Lamerton, connections are descended from them.

I can find no reference to Joanna Cowling after 1851, then in 1857 Joanna Bourke seems to appear from nowhere, with precisely the same personal details. The purpose of this thread was to see if anyone else would turn up something I might have overlooked. If I am dealing with one Joanna, how she changes from Cowling to Bourke is something of a mystery. I can only think that with Plymouth having such strong military service ties, she may have had a short term union with a soldier or sailor. I am hoping that when I receive a copy of the Joanna Bourke/Richard Craig marriage certificate things will be clearer.
