Default More Bull's in Hampshire (Romany)

I am on the hunt for more information on Luke Bull

    1861 RG9 718 131 13
    BULL George 38 Whitchurch
    BULL Jane 38 vernham
    BULL John 17 Hythe
    BULL Mary A 13
    BULL George 2
    SAILOR William 9 V
BULL Luke 75 V Blind Sherbourne

I believe the 1851 reference is H107 1681 478 and there are quite a few people in the household.

Would like to try and work out who Luke's wife was and hoping she may be on 1851 or if someone can also look up 1841 for me.

I believe he was born in Sherbourne born about 1786 if anyone can find the baptism

I believe he married an Ann James born 1784 Hurstbourne Priors, but no marriage date, if anyone can find that.

    Thanks a lot

    David

Hi David - I have had a look at the births and found this one - it wasthe only one in the parish records for Hampshire..

14 October 1792 son Luke Ball born at VineLodge, East Sherborne, travelling Paupers

    Bramley Hamshire

    First parent Wm

    Second parent Rosamund

    and the marriage is

22 : May 1811 Bull Luke to James Ann :

    Parish: Hurstbourne Priors

    County: Hampshire

I have had a look at this reference for 1851 for Luke Bull...HO107/1681/~F478

It says on 1861 census he was a widower for 12 years but here it appear that it is Ester as his wife with a 26 year old son.

So now I am slightly confused having done the above. The son would be born in 1825 unless his mother was the previous wife or there is more than one Luke Ball

On the 1841 there are different details which just dont tally-sorry not to be more conclusive

The dates and locations look close enough have found quite a few date differences digging into the Romany side, the information and approximate dates came from someones Romany family tree.

The Luke in 1861 is the right Luke - He is living with George Bull his son by Ann James

    Name:George Bull
    Gender:Male
    Baptism/Christening Date:14 Nov 1824
    Baptism/Christening Place:WHITCHURCH,HAMPSHIRE,ENGLAND
    Father's Name:Luke Bull
    Mother's Name:Ann
    Indexing Project (Batch) Number:J13930-1
    System Origin:England-ODMSource Film Number:1041304Reference Number:

Bandit (thanks for the good work) has found this marriage
22 : May 1811 Bull Luke to James Ann :
    Parish: Hurstbourne Priors

The ages in the census don't concern me too much George barely aged himself over a 30 year period in the census!

    Luke supposedly was from sherborne
in 1851 he is listed as from Branley
in 1861 he is listed as from Sherborne

The census seems to concur with Bandits baptism

Guess I need to see the marriage from 1811 and see if the parents are listed to be certain

Georges birth seems to fit if this is who was on the census

Hi Dave I had a look at the 1871 census and here are my findings

BULL, Luke 1819 42 M born Andover Hampshire

BULL, Luke 1857 4 M born Andover Hampshire

BULL, Luke 1786 75 M born Kingsclere Hampshire

1819 parents Luke and Elizabeth whose son is 1857 Luke

1786 parents George and Jane whose son was born in 1786
does this make it easier to understand . I could look for the othe rmarriage as well

Hi Dave - dont forget that Sherborne is in Dorset; the problem is that there are no Lukes there; there are those in Hampshire tho.

Thanks bandit I was assuming the sherborne, referred to some of the little places in Hampshire like Monks Sherborne and Sherborn St John. Did you have a baptism for 1786 in Kingsclere? A lot of my family came from that area and that is the date I was given from a Romany family tree. Luke seems to have a family failing not to change ages through the census'.

If there is a Luke from 1786 in Kingsclere that may very well be the right Luke , although the later Luke is probably better in terms of place - Bramley is in East Sherborne and Luke claims to be from Bramley and Sherborne respectively.

Could you post the census details for Luke as I don't have access.

    Thanks for the help Bandit

If you go to this site, and use the search facility, you will find Luke Bull baptised 1793 Bramley, son of William Bull and Rosamond Andrews and all his family, as well as his siblings and families.
    .
He married Ann James first and then Elizabeth Doe.
