Looking for Hannah BULLEY of Norfolk, ENGLAND
I do hope that you can help me to find a christening record for my ancestor
Hannah BULLEY, who consistently claimed that she was born in the Smallburgh
Union (Workhouse). From her ages in various census records and her age at
death in 1892, Hannah appears to have been born in 1809. Unfortunately,
birth records for the Smallburgh Workhouse are very patchy with many gaps.
Some time around 1829, Hannah had an illegitimate son at Catfield, whom she
named Robert. Young Robert would have been about five years old when his
mother married Christopher OSBORNE (a farm worker from Catfield) on 19 May
1834, at St Martin at Oak in Norwich.
After the birth of their first child (a daughter named Maria), Christopher
and Hannah had her christened at the Catfield church on 7 Feb 1837. However,
Hannah evidently decided that she should also christen young Robert who may
have been passed off as an OSBORNE since her marriage.
Presumably to correct this perception, Hannah had young Robert christened
first as "Robert son of Hannah BULLEY, Spinster of Catfield" which entry was
immediately followed by baby "Maria, daughter of Christopher & Hannah
OSBORNE, of Catfield", which latter entry noted Christopher's profession as
a labourer. Unfortunately, the vicar of the Catfield church did not record
the birth date of young Robert BULLEY.
For many years, I have tried to discover a possible connection between
Hannah (mother of Robert BULLEY) and the only other BULLEY family I can find
from Smallburgh - that of Edward BULLEY and his wife Elizabeth (nee
BUCKENHAM) who had 13 children at Smallburgh in the 1770s and 1780s - but
alas, to no avail.
I have hit a very HARD brick wall and would really appreciate some help.
