Exclamation Robert Murphy, Cabinet Maker in Bristol

My 3x Great Grandfather was James Murphy, a shoe and boot maker who was born in Bristol. His entry in the 1891 census specifies he was born in the St Paul's area of Bristol in about 1820. I have marriage certificates for both of James' marriages which specify that his father was called Robert Murphy, who was a cabinet maker.

To date I've not been able to find any records for Robert Murphy and I'm yet to identify James' mother - any assistance will be gratefully received.

    Many thanks

    Karin

Thank for your help, but James Murphy seems very clear that his father is called Robert Murphy, providing that information on both his marriage certificates, so I don't think this is correct. James is also married by 1841, so his wife, Mary Ann, should also be on the census (they married in Bristol). Saying that though, I haven't yet found James and Mary Ann in the 1841 census.

    Hello

Can ypu post the information from the marriage certificate.

The 1841 census info above does appear to relat tpacpcouple and their child who were not born in the County of Somerset!

The fact that Robert is shown as thefather is good, however it doesnot mean that he is resident in the England, he could be a cabinet maker in Ireland, historically a lot ofIrish left Ireland due to economic conditions in their country at that time

    Hi

Hang on, I'm confused - does the 1841 census say that the father is Robert or James?

    Hi Karin,

The 1841 census doesn't say where an individual was born, it just states whether or not they were born in the county in which were enumerated in. Also ages were rounded down by up to 5 years.

    1841 census, living Cameley.

James Murphy 20, Shoemaker, not born in county
Mary Murphy 20, not born in county
James Murphy 2, born in county

Oh I see - yes it appears you have found my 3xGreat Grandfather James in the 1841 census, which is helpful as I hadn't previously found him in that census. It makes sense that he is recorded as not being born in the county as James was born in Bristol. Thanks for uncovering that.

It seems though, like for me, James' father, Robert the cabinet maker, and his mother remain a mystery. Perhaps I should look into whether they are also residing in Somerset in 1841.
