Question wroughton- Taylor- Birth records Please

My grandfater was born in Wroughton in 1891 his birth is reg at highworth but i dont know who his parents are and would like to find them. He was brought up by his grandparents and there is a lot of secrecy to his parents. His name is Wilfred George Taylor. I have been told but dont know if it the truth that his father has a double barrelled surname.

    Hi,

The only way to verify his parents is to buy his birth certificate, unless you can find his baptism. If he was an illegitimate child his father may not be named on the certificate.

Wilfred George Taylor, Highworth, Mar qrt 1891, 5a/16. Certificates can be ordered here........... General Register Office (GRO) - Official information on births, marriages and deaths

    Hi Slizzy

Thank you, I would say it was him in the 1901 Census but my mother (who will not tell me anything) denies this, but it could be her trying to put me off track. As far as I know his father is named on the Birth certificate as my Mother said he has a double barrelled name but will not tell me what it is. Think I will have to do as you state and order a copy of his BC to find the truth.
I would like to know why it is all such a big secret cant just be because he may be illegitimate I was told not to pry as there is a sinister past!!!!

    Hello Jacqui

Go for it, it will satisfy you knowing whether your grandfather has a double barrelled named father, or if he was illegitimate ( k/a baseborn then) does your mother need to know well that is up to you... generations change we are more receptive to events these days.

Let us know how you get on.

Mum knows the truth but was sworn to secrecy by her parents and will not break that promise.

    Marriages Sep 1857, Cricklade, 5a/44
William Strange and also indexed Tryphena Godwin

According to census returns he was born Lyneham and Tryphena Clack. The 1891 census entry for Mary Taylor says she's their niece,
the only Mary Taylor born circa 1871 Wootton Basset is the one with parents William and Emma. William was a canal Boatman.

    1881 Census.

    William Taylor 42
    Emma Taylor 34
    Susan Taylor 12
    Frances E. Taylor 11
    Mary L. Taylor 10
    Alice M. Taylor 8
    Robert H. Taylor 6
    Fredrick J. Taylor 3
    Emily L. Taylor 1

This would appear to be William and Emma's marriage,

    Marriages Sep 1868, Cricklade, 5a/43
William Taylor and also indexed Emma Jefferies.

I cannot see how Mary can be William and Tryphena's niece as neither her mother nor father appear to be siblings of either William or Tryphena. I suppose it could be a half sibling relationship, I'll try and find them on census returns before they were married.

I cannot find Wilfred in 1911! Have you found him, Jacqui?

As for William Strange, I think he's in the Work House in 1841 along with a sister, either they were orphaned or abandoned when underage. I cannot be certain it's him but there isn't another to fit.
