Thread: James Davies Powell

My grandfather was James Davies Powell born in castleford in 1888 (I have the birth cert.) His Mother Was Emma Davies and father Thomas davies. My grandfather joined the army is 1908 served 4 years and then went to fight WW1. My question is why the name change to Powell? I can't find any other Powells in the family...Grandad had older 3 siblings, Thomas Henry, peter and Bertha...Thoms Henry was born in Glamorgan...Peter I can find no record...Bertha in Castleford....on the 1901 Census Peter, Bertha and James all have the last name of Lilliman (found them all on the 1890 census under that name too but I can't find a marriage)...I have been in contact with Bertha's family and they don't know why the name change either. I'd also like to know what happened to Peter. I have some info on Thomas henry, suffered shell shock but I don't have a death date or family info....I have been working on this a long time and would love to find some answers. My dad and his siblings all had the last name of Powell. I have a lot more info if needed, any help would be wonderful!

my reading of this scenario might be:

emma was married to thomas davies and had one son thomas h born pontypool. they split and she set up home with another coal miner george liliman in yorkshire but did not marry as both were already married. . later she got back with her original husband. the fact that in 1901 census the children are down as liliman and stepchildren makes me think they might have not been thomas davies children but passed off as george lillimans. perhaps she could have met a mr powell and they are actually his children, they found out this later on and adopted his surname in later life.


have you seen the 1911 census for all the family. what does that say for them all??

i see that he is down as james powell when he enlisted in 1905 and his brother as henry thomas powell, but that he married as james davies powell in 1912

Do you have your grandfather's marriage certificate to Ellen Marshall? If so, can you please provide ALL details.
