    Exclamation George Bethell

    Our brick wall is finding birth records for my Great Grandfather George Bethell of Aston in Birmingham, Warwickshire. We know his mother was Elizabeth Bull (nee Hope, born 8 September 1814) and that she married James Bethell (born 1818/19) on 27 September 1856 in the Parish Church All Saints, Birmingham, Warwickshire. We know that Elizabeth Bull was listed as a lodger with a family whose head was named Ann Hart in the 1851 census. There was no listing for a George on that census entry. We believe that George was born around 1850, but we are unsure about who his father was, although in the 1861 census, he is listed as George Bethell, with father James and mother Elizabeth. George married Elizabeth Clarke (born21 March 1855) on 18 May 1874 in the Parish Church Bishop Ryder, Birmingham. We have certificates for the marriages, but have been unable to find either certificates or Parish Records for George's birth or baptism. We are also unable to find birth records for James Bethell, George's father? Any help would be gratefully received.

    Hello

    Have you seen the 1891 census entry at RG12 2423 66 18 where there are 3 generations listed on the return, James B 1818, G( eorge?) b 1849

    Have a look in the trade directories for Pearl Button Turners

    James b 1818 appears on the 1851 census as unmarried with his mother, therefore it is likely that George BETHELL is registered under a different surname!

    Hi, if this is George in 1861 he was born circa 1851/2 which may be why he's not with his mother on the 1851 census. They have been mistranscribed as RISHELL
    RG9; Piece: 2164; Folio: 33; Page: 2;
    James 42 Button Maker Birmingham
    Elizabeth 47 West Bromwich
    George 9 Birmingham
    Horsbron 2 (Osborn) Birmingham

    1871, transcribed as BESSELL RG10; Piece: 3124; Folio: 80; Page: 2, James is a widower, George 18. So it is most likely George was born 1852 -/+1yr.

    Elizabeth Hope married Richard Bull 25/11/1834 at Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, so George should be registered as George Bull.
