    Default James Pugh, rather elusive.

I actually have two brick walls but I'm working on James at the moment so I'll go with him.
Born 1805 in West Brom to Mary and Richard Pugh. He appears on the census married to Hannah and with a son John. My problems are; I can't find a marriage between him and a Hannah, except on the brough family organisation website, where it states that "Hannah Bott marries James Pugh" Sedgley 1834 - this fits in well but I can't find a record for it anywhere else, including on family search where the officer from the said website told me it appeared. So question 1 Was she a Bott?

The second problem is rather more curious, on the 1871 census James is living with a Mary Noth (which I'm pretty sure is a transcription error for Mary NoRth) she is 16 and listed as his Grandaughter, but the problem is that they had only one child, a son John Pugh. In 1861 Mary North was 6 and living a few doors down from the Pughs with her mother Ann and two sisters, Ann is a widow, and I'm fairly convinced that the father of Mary was not John but Isaac North. So how did James come to be listed as her grandfather?

Bit long winded I'm afraid but if anyone has any clues I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Em

    Hi Emmar!

Can you do us a favour please and say where in the the UK you have found your James Pugh? This will help us to track him. There are several Sedgley's throughout the UK. Also, if you have any information re siblings, parents, kids, occupation, all census refs and dates you are quoting etc that will also be really helpful!

    Thanks!
    Rubina

Is this the James you refer to?

    1851 England Census
    Name: James Pugh
Age: 46 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805
Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Hannah Pugh
    Gender: M (Male)
Where born: West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England
Civil parish: West Bromwich Ecclesiastical parish: St James
    County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England
Street Address: Harvill Hawthorn, West Bromwich
    Occupation: Boot & Shoe Maker
    Registration district: West Bromwich
    Sub-registration district: West Bromwich North
ED, institution, or vessel: 1m Household schedule number: 9
    James Pugh 46
Hannah Pugh 43 B Tipton Staffordshire
John Pugh 12 b West Bromwich
Arther Ward 18 John Forster 17 Apprentice Boot & Shoe Maker
    HO107; Piece: 2026; Folio: 244; Page: 2

I looked under parish records for Sedgley, Stafford and only found this entry for a James and Hannah. You would need to check it against the parish records.

IGI Individual Record FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0 British Isles
JAMES PUGH Male Marriages: Spouse: HANNAH BOTT
Marriage: 24 OCT 1834 Sedgley, Stafford, England

I also found this which might be worth looking into:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
    Name: Mary North
    Year of Registration: 1854
    Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    DISTRICT: West Bromwich
    COUNTY: Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
    Volume: 6b Page: 520

There is one theory Mary was the daughter of ??? North and the father was John Pugh but they did not marry and Mary was registered in her mothers name.

I had just type out a long reply and the storm came and zapped my internet! So I'll try again today.

Firstly thank you all for your help. Sorry I didn't put the places for my James Pugh, I should have know better as I know that there are about 5000 James Pughs! All my Pughs are from West Bromwich so far - born and resident. Noggin, thanks for the marriage record, it fits perfectly, I wonder why I couldn't find it? That is the correct census for James Pugh.

I did wonder if Mary North was the illegitimate daughter of John but the Isaac North and Ann marriage stands up and also John would have been only 17 when Mary was born, not unfeasible but there were other siblings.. It never occured to me that he could be Mary's Step-father though that would make sense and would make the census correct. What is odd is that John Pügh later married Julia Benn and Mary North married Julia's brother george, so they're all inter-linked.

I will follow up the Ann and John suggestion.
    Thank you all
    Em
