Think I have his birth as Middlestone near Bishop Auckland but census reports Felling [Gateshead] as birthplace.
Located Baptism in Gateshead for correct birthday [4 Nov 1849] on LDS Film 252783
Can anyone access that film and find the baptism on 25 Nov 1849?

This could get confusing, I have found two James Robsons on the 1881 census both born in 1849 -
James 1, born Felling, is married to a Mary with a son Ernest Wm. He is a printers compositor.
RG11 4914 92 25
James 2, born Middlestone, is married to a Mary Ann, with children May Liza, James and Francis. He is a horse driver (pitman.)

Looks like either of these chaps could fit in with what you know already.
