    Exclamation James Marston

Im looking for my maternal GG Grandfather. So far with no luck. His name was James Marston. I have no info on a birth year or a wife for him. He had a son James born 1871 born West London or Battersea who married Alice Parrish in 1891 in Lewisham. I can only find one James Marston born in 1871 in London but it cannot be him as he was still living at home after 1891. The 1901 census has James (1871) living at 6 Childers Street St Paul Deptford. In 1911 James (1871) was living at 14 Russell Road West Croydon. His marriage Certificate ,Lewisham ,May 15 1891, has his father listed as James Marston (Deceased) a baker by trade, with a Jane Marston also present.

The James living at living at 14 Russell Road West Croydon was a fishmonger b 1861. He had been married to his wife Alice (1872) for 19 years and they had 7 children.
What was the age of James on the marriage cert when he married Alice? ie where did you get his birth as 1871.

The 1901 census would suggest 1871 but which census gives the right birth date?

Somewhere in this process I had convinced myself that 1871 was the rigth birth date but having now revisited the birth certificate I see that his age is given as 31 in 1891 which suggests 1861 as the correct date.

That would make him a very old father but its not impossible.

Could this be the same James & son as the 1871 Census 35a 124 (Kensington) ? I can't see the record as I am not currently subscribed. He also has a wife called Jane.

    Hello

Presumably both the 1911 an d1901 census with James MARSTON and family on are your correct ancestor!

At post#3 you mention a birth certificate, was this an error and you were referrring to the marriage certificate?

Is the marriage entry on line?

Yes, my mistake. It was the marriage certificate, which is on line, for James Marston ( A Sailor) & Alice Parish, (Jane Marston in attendance) Lewisham 1891 (vol. 1d, page 1316) Certainly 1911 & 1901 are the correct person. 1901 seems to have the wrong age. There aren't many candidates in the records for his father and there is clearly some doubt as to where he was born and where he was from 1861 to 91 which doesn't help.

    Hello

    1) As the 1891 census was taken on the 5th April 1891 and the marriage was 15th May 1891 have you found Alice, you never know James maybe close by

    2) Was the marriage by Banns or Licence, if the latter you need to source the Licence!

    3) Have you considered the Merchant / Royal Navy, you say he declared himself a sailor ( later to become a fishmonger) on marriage check these sites out: TNA and Crew list
