howlett my great grandmother was a daughter to a lord i have yet to find proof, but know who he was, on my great nans birth cert there is no dad, they wouldnt be able to name the dad i don't think for fear of the man.

Do you have your GG grandfather marriage certificate?

In 1871 your ancestor MAry HOWLETT was living with her parents RG10 1869 75 19

In 1881 Ernest E HOWLETT aged 8 is living with Elijah & Mary nee HOWLETT ( married1/4 Sept 1873) WING RG11 2007 64 4 and is desc as WING's son

As it was common to have your child baptised, in case you neede to claim Parish Relief or go into the workhouse, I think you need ot check the Parish Records to see if there are any notes recorded as to who is the father.

Have you looked at the timeframe:

2 April 1871 on 1871 census with parents
2 April 1871 Elijah WING is living 4 doors away
11 Sept 1872 has Ernest, you have this certificate, does it give her employment?
July 1873 marries Elijah WING suggest you get their marriage cert or look the entry up in the Parish Records.
