I think I may have posted my brick wall request in the wrong place ...Hope this is the right place! It concerns FRANCES MARLBOROUGH, my g g grandmother who was born in 1817 in Clerkenwell. However, I have been unable to find a proper birth record for her, nor details of her parentage, and would much appreciate any clues or help anyone can give me. Frances died in 1890 in Southwark, and was married to Wiliam Henry Allen, a lighterman. Many thanks. Jill Gibbard

I realise that Frances' year of birth differs from the 1817 that you have in both these sources.
Through process of elimination, I believe Frances' father was William Marlborough and her mother was also Frances. I've looked at London Baptisms and found these, but I can't see any more info than this-maybe someone will be able to look for you.

The certification system ( as we know it) of birth/marriages/deaths in the UK commenced on 1st July 1837, prior to that date we are totally dependent on Parish Records.
One source that can be used for reference is the site familysearch.org and finding aout about the locality you are searching in and the whereabouts of the records are is genuki.co.uk
Once you have the information from familysearch, assuming it has digitised the Parish Records or similar you need to source the original entry, using the second site!
Records are the
1) prime source, those vreated at the time of the event
2) Bishops Transcripts ( BT's) copy's of the prime source minus the 'local knowledge additions', say the father of an illegitimate child,
3) any other record you can find, trade diredtory, Church Accounts , wills et al.

Thank you so much for these replies. I think I can now proceed with this family. Always a bit of a nuisance when one lives abroad to access the fantastic records available in London and elsewhere. Bravo Ancestry for this initiative!
