Help please!
I have traced my family to Ireland but where?
Thomas Davis b1796-9 married Mary Blott b1802, I assume in Ireland abt 1820.
They had 3 sons in Ireland; Thomas b1821, James b1826 and George b1829. They moved to Barnsley, Yorkshire, England during 1830s. Thomas's trade was a handloom linen weaver. They had further children in Barnsley, all girls, Maria b1837, Phoebe b1839, and Jane b1842.
The Davis may be Davies and they could have come from Wales or Scotland to Ireland for work before moving on to Yorkshire.
They first appear on the 1841 English census as living in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England.
It looks like Thomas had a brother, Joshua Davis b1810 who followed him to Barnsley and he appears on the 1851 english census. Joshua married Alice Hillyard b1818 in 1843 in Barnsley - they had children- Eliza Davis b1844,Thomas Davis b1846, John Davis b1848, Jane davis b1850 and Joshua Davis b1859.
Assumption: the davis clan came from northern ireland - why -
1) linen weaving took place mostly in the northern areas of Ireland.
2) marriages/burials from 1840 in England are in protestant churches.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks,
Bob Davies
