    Exclamation James Lewis abt1840 Manchester

I have hit a wall with James Lewis a tailor b abt 1840 Manchester .I cannot verify his birth details or find his parents and would appreciate any help. His first child William Ernest was born in 1866 at The Green,Darlaston Staffs to his wife Sarah nee Freeman.A second child Henry was born abt 1868. He married Mary Anne Webster of Pleck, Walsall on Dec 19th 1870 at All Saints church Moxley Staffs. when both were resident at Darlaston. On the marriage cert.James is described as a widower and a tailor but his fathers name and occupation are not given. He takes his two children into this second marriage and I can find this family in the 1871 census at The Green, Darlaston and in the 1881 census at Shaw Hall Bank Saddleworth . James dies in October 1881 at Miller Hey Mossley (Ashton under Lyne). I cannot find records of James' birth registration, any census records prior to 1871 ,his marriage to Sarah Freeman or the death of Sarah.

Thanks very much Elsabels but I think this family is Lewers (or Sewers!) in other censuses . I am not 100% sure but I think James Lewis/Lewers born Salford 1841 m Alice Whitnell Dec 1863 son Robert b 1867. Then James Lewers dies Dec 1870 at Everton and in the 1871 census Alice ,widow and Robert age 3 are living in Everton.
The James Lewis of my interest was born Manchester, moved to Staffordshire married Sarah Freeman was then widowed and remarried Mary Ann Webster before moving to Saddleworth and appearing in the 1871 census. I am trying to establish his parents but cannot confirm his birthdate ,trace a marriage to Sarah Freeman or find census entries prior to 1871.Regards.

This could be 2nd child Henry's registration from FreeBMD: Mar qtr 1868 Henry William Lewis Walsall (which includes Darlaston)

There is a death registered for Sept Qtr 1870 of a Sarah Lewis 25yrs also Walsall.

Ian - have you ruled out any of the other James Lewis' christened around 1840 on familysearch.org?
16/2/1840 son of Frederick & Mary Ann Manchester Cathedral
27/12/1840 son of Thomas & Sarah Manchester Cathedral
14/3/1840 son of John & Ann Manchester Cathedral

Parents not Thomas & Sarah as their James is still at home with them for 1871 census when your James is married to Mary Ann.
No James at home in 1851 census with Frederick & Mary (or Margaret or May) or with John & Ann.

Thanks Tawyn. I feel any further progress might come from documents relating to the first marriage to Sarah Freeman. I know the family lived in The Green Darlaston in 1866, but cannot find any marriage or census records prior to this. regards,Ian
