Thread: Charles Henry (Hudson or Hodgson) Hughes

Charles Henry (Hudson or Hodgson) Hughes was born about 1839.

He married Hannah Mardle in London City in 1876 (ref 1c 100) and died in 1886 (1d 241).

The 1881 census shows they have two sons, both born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire; Charles in 1877 and Joseph in 1879.

The census states Charles Henry was born in Bristol, but I cannot definitively find a birth record for a Charles Hughes around 1839 in Bristol (Gloucestershire?). I also cannot find Charles prior to 1881.

I'd also like to know to whom Charles the son married and when.

Can anyone help fill in the missing pieces for me?

Charles Henry Hodgson HUGHES, age 35, widower, Seaman, of 8 Richard's Buildings - father: late John HUGHES, Anchor Smith
Hannah MARDLE age 24, Spinster, of 6 Francis Place - father: William James MARDLE, Tin Plate Worker

Charles Henry's other son Joseph married Harriet Banner in Stepney in 1906. They had two sons as well, both born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, Joseph James in 1907 and William in 1910.

Joseph James married Violet Brown in Stepney in 1930. I found a marriage entry for William Hughes to an Olive Baxter in Stepney in 1936 (1c 463).

Could you confirm whether that William's marriage is the William born in Yorkshire?

Thank you for answering one question, but you now raise another, several in fact.

If Charles Hughes was a widower at 35, who was his first wife? When did they marry? When did she die? Any children?

I haven't been able to find Charles prior to the 1881 census, but it looks like you have found another Hughes family line.
