Exclamation My wifes family Chezzi and Dolan

I'm experiencing great difficulty in tracing the Dolan side of my wifes family. I understand that large amounts of Irish records were destroyed, yet, I feel that there may still exist a written record in some parish. Great Grandfather James P. Dolan was born in 1841 in Ireland. Place, parents etc. unknown. He was married by the Whigs in Scotland in 1873 to Sarah Devine (b. 1848). We know all from there onward. It's his ancestry that's the problem.

The problem I have with the Chezzi side is the difficulty of finding and contacting the correct Italian agency to obtain the information. It is known that Grandfather Guglielmo Chezzi was born (b. 1878) in or around Parma Italy and probably met and married Aldina Zanini (b. 1885) in the same area.

Would it be possible to get some more definite pointers to information related to these people?

On another forum My T****s.com Family History Aldina and Guglielmo are listed...When I am trying to track down archive information I send letters off to family members still living. (The shock of having to introduce myself) .I have even made telephone calls to the UK..If I don't know where they are living I look them up through the phone book..It seems Aldina and Guglielmo had a number of children..I would try and find living connections to them through their children..I have also given you above the submitters name and address in Canada so would be dropping him a line..You have zaba search in the States and Canada...

Your problem with Irish research is that James Dolan is a very common name. For example in the 1901 Irish census there were 350 people with that name. You need to try and find some information outside Ireland to narrow the search. Otherwise it’s a needle in a haystack. Ideally you need to know his religion, and townland or parish to search for him.

Statutory recording of births only started in 1864, so you won’t find a birth certificate for him. You may find his baptism but, as I say, you need to know where he came from first. Parish records are not all on line, and manual searching is often required.

Firstly I would get a copy of his Scottish marriage certificate, as that should give you both his parents names. I would also check any censuses that he may have been included in, in Scotland in case they record where in Ireland he came from. (Often it just says Ireland, but sometimes you get lucky). You can search for these on the Scotland’s People website. Scottish family history search Census birth records scotland genealogy - ScotlandsPeople

Other good sources for finding this are immigration & naturalisation records which can show town/townland of origin as well as parents and siblings traveling together. US Census returns sometimes include place of birth. Look out also for other Irish people nearby in the censuses. Immigrants often settled near people they knew from home. Check military records, old diaries, gravestones, family bibles, wills and obituaries. Funeral home records can be very informative.
