Thread: John Shore

I'm stuck trying to find my GGF. He went by the name of John Shore b1870 and married to Mary Walsh. We believe he emigrated to Liverpool, England from Russia or Poland (some said he was a Russian Jew) around 1888. He came with his father (Joseph, a plumber) and a sister who is said to have married into the Samuel family (Liverpool jewellers).He changed his name to a street he lived in (Shaw Street). I believe he was interred during WW1. That's it. I would love to find his sister or his place of birth or his real name.

How do you get back to this, can you post any census references,/ places / years etc.

Born - unknown Russia/Poland ?? Married Mary 6 March 1892 and stated to be living at 27 Talbot Street at the time but is not there in the 1891 census. Family story says his parents and one sister emigrated and I can't find a family fitting that description in the 1881 or 1891 census. I have traced the Samuel family tree also and can't find a match.

Have you seen the marriage ceertificate? It appears that he may have anglicised his surname, to check naturalisation papers his other surname needs to be known.

I have both marriage certificates (Thomas Spellman died within weeks of their marriage). I did find a Shure but I can't find any naturalisation papers. Was that necessary at that time ?

I believe I found my MAry Walsh in the 1891 census as Mary Walsh living with her mother Mary (the address the same as her marriage certificate).
We seem to be going round in circles here.

Can you give full details on the marriage cert - ages, occupations status (Thomas Spellman died within weeks of their marriage was Mary a widow ?). Both fathers names and occuptions plus witnesses.

Mary Walsh aged 20 14 Hodson Street - father Thomas Walsh (deceased)
witness - Richard Morely, Catherine Walker

Fathers name Jospeh and daughter - name /year of birth. - HAVE NO IDEA OF DAUGHTER'S NAME. JOHN SHORE IS MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER'S FATHER. Apparently marrying out caused him to be ostracised from his family so my granmother never met her aunt.

My grandmother said that her father was imprisoned in Liverpool during world war I as he was Russian/Polish/German/Prussian
