    Exclamation Patrick Gannon

My great grandfather Patrick Gannon was born March 17 1869. I located Patrick Gannon being baptised in Garrymona, Offaly March 25 1869.
His parents are listed as George Whittell (Protestant) and Catherine Gannon, but he is listed as illegitimate. His sister Mary was born August 10 1872 in Garrymona and only the mom is listed. I located the marriage of Michael Baker and Catherine Gannon on October 31 1975. James Gannon is listed as Catherine's father and Thomas Gannon is a witness, both from Garrymona. His sister Mary stated on one marriage form that her father was James White and Catherine Gannon and on the other Thomas White and Catherine Gannon. All records indicate Catherine was married only once and that she was probably born around 1850. I have been unable to track any farther back. I would love Catherine's birth certificate, but have not yet found one close. I also am unsure of George Whittell since I have no idea of when he was born or who his parents were.
    Thank you , Shanon

    Default Patrick Gannon

You are looking for Catherine Gannon’s birth certificate. Unfortunately you won’t get one as her birth was before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland, in 1864. You may get her baptism, but for that you’d need to check parish records. It was traditional to marry in the wife’s church, so her own baptism records (which should give you her parents), and perhaps her siblings records should be in that church. Most of the parish records that still exist have been copied to the National Library in Dublin. www.nli.ie/

I note that there were 2 Gannon families in Garrymona in the 1901 census. Relatives perhaps?

There were Ganmons and Whittle (note spelling) entries in Griffiths Valuation in the parish (Geashill) in 1854 but none in Garrymona townland. So hard to pinpoint any that might be George or Catherine’s families.

Sp parish records seem your best bet at this stage.

    Default Update on Patrick Gannon/Whittle

Thank you for your response Elwyn. I have the Griffiths valuation records and the census for 1901 and 1911 already. I also have the exploring family origins in old tullamore town book. Unfortunately they are only names to me. They are unfamiliar so I don't know how they are connected other than quessing that they are probably cousins. I have also already gone through various parish records, but as I have already stated... I am unable to locate any that seem likely. I am hoping that when the scotland census is opened I can track Patrick's sisters records and find a distant cousin in Lanarkshire or Bute. I can only hope that someone can read my post and remember something from there own records or better yet make a connection to my family tree.

    shanon
