I found the marriage and Joseph and Alice in the 1871-81-91 census living in Wiltshire.
What is the ref for the 1901 census please?

Thank you so much for your reply.
I think joseph phelps must have died soon after the 1891 census, possibly 1893/4. Alice is found on the 1901 census living in gloucester as wife of samuel hulbert. all of this is not plausible however. Samuel hulbert's future wife (married in 1902 in dudley) was alice rosina phelps, born 1882, alice jane little's daughter. The children listed on the 1901 census are in fact not all samuel hulbert's children from his first marriage. Thomas R, Harold EJ and Alice E are all correct. However Thomas, Frank, Charles and Emily H are Alice Jane Little's youngest children, all phelps not hulberts. All very strange.....
I welcome your comments on this.
Hello
Alice b 1851 can be found on the following:
1891 RG 12 1606 81 3
1901 13 2426 109 19
No it was more convienient to have all the chidren particularly if at school with the same surname.all phelps not hulberts. All very strange.....
Have you checked a later census to see if the children reverted to their surname PHELPS
Alice may not have been married to Samuel HULBERT, there is a 15 year age gap and Samuel looks as if he was a widower with young children, so may have needed 'a mother' to look after the children!
Have you checked to see if Alice was with any of the 11 children in later years?

Thank you very much for replying.
Yes, all the "Phelps" children reverted to their proper name. O ne of them, Alice Rosina, not listed on the 1901 census was my husband's grandmother. I know what happened to all of them except Alice Phelps. I have tried looking on the BMD indexes but to no avail. I have checked the 1911 census but unfortunately was unable to find alice rosina and samuel Hulbert in Warwick (where they were living at the time and until they both passed away) - there are numerous Hulberts listed - and therefore doesn't know if alice (Alice rosina's mum) was with them then or maybe had gone back to Wiltshire or had passed away. The "Phelps" and Hulbert children named on the 1901 census all remained in the Warwick/Leamington area except for emily H and thomas who went back to Wiltshire/ somerset. Rather complicated isn't it!!!
Mother Alice is not with them! Samuel HULBERT 1867....I have checked the 1911 census but unfortunately was unable to find alice rosina and samuel Hulbert in Warwick
Thank you Elsabels.
I wonder what happened to her after 1901!!!! Any ideas how I could find out? I feel I have tried all the options available to me.
I value your help.
