    Exclamation James Moss

Speaking of brick walls and missing links, I have one of each, if there are any Moss researchers available who can help. I'm at a dead end with my gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather James Moss b. abt. 1750 and d. 1801, James can be found in the Greenhithe, Swanscombe, Kent area of England around 1789 when he marries his second wife Susannah Webb. Together they have the following children; Jane b. 1790, James b. 1794, Elizabeth b. 1795, Sarah b. 1797, Alice b. 1798, and Joseph Webb Moss b. 1800. I can not seem to locate a record of James' (b. 1750) first marriage or any births from that union either. There is also a William and Margaret Moss and a Samuel and Sarah Moss in the Swanscombe area during the same period as James and Susannah. Most of the children and grandchildren of James and Susannah eventually end up in Leicester, Leicestershire together in the 1800's, which leads me to a missing link. John Moss married to Lydia Hyde at Great Linford, Bucs in 1815. Both born abt. 1788, John's birthplace is listed on the 1851 census as Carlton, Oxfordshire, and Lydia's as Daventry, Northamptonshire. John and Lydia's children were; Thomas b. 1821 in Stony Stratford, Bucks. twins Sarah Anne and Lydia, both b. 1820 in Stony Stratford, and John, b. 1824 Swithland, Leicestershire. John died in 1855 in Leicester, Leicestershire. Any info on any of these families would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

    Hello

Your dates are suggested as being 'about' therefore I assume you have not looked for the date of the particular event in the relevant Parish records!.

    Is this the 2nd marriage

    spouse:Susannah Webb
marriage:22 Jan 1790 — Saint Mary Woolnoth And Woolchurch Haw, London, London, England
    record title:England Marriages, 1538–1973
    groom's name: James Moss
    bride's name:Susannah Webb
    marriage date: 22 Jan 1790
marriage place:Saint Mary Woolnoth And Woolchurch Haw,London,London,England
    indexing project (batch) number:M00165-2system origin:England-ODMsource film number:374497

The marriage is listed in Pallotts Marriage Index for England 1780 - 1837 and indicates:

    1) James was a widower

    2) and of Swanconbe Kent

    3) the marriage was by Licence, the marriage licence should be obtained and will give you additional information

    4) Susannah was a spinster and pres of this Parish

If the children were baptised at Greenhithe, you will probably need to search the relevant records for the baptisms.

It is also likely that you will find James MOSS first marriage in these

I am uncertain where the rest of the MOSS names, William & Margaret ; & Samuel & Sarah fit into this.

If there are other famillies in the Swancombe Parish Registers bearing the same surname, I would create there own family trees, as it is likely that they may turn out to be part of the extended family and lead you back to your original query about James!

As you live away form the area of research, suggest you look at the site Familysearch.org for a local centre where you may order the films and view them
