Thomas born 1828 Mirfield Yorkshire. I found him in 1851 St James Westminster Middlesex living with Samuel and Elizabeth Gill who were probably an aunt and uncle. I can find no trace of him after that.
Can someone help?

What was his occupation? do you think he could have gone abroad to live? joined the armed forces? or perhaps his name has been mistranscribed. Have you tried any variations on his name? I too looked and cannot find anything on the census. Do you have any certs that will help. I notice he has gone from Yorkshire to Middlesex and wonder why. was it perhaps to do with his job?

His occupation was shopman whatever that means. Interestingly his mother also lives in London but he does not appear with her or her new husband(?) and daughter in 1841. I could not find a likely death 1851-1900 so I will have to explore the possibility of going abroad.

It could be but he is a long way from London. Hard to tell.

dont forget the ccensus is only a snapshot of one night. he could simply have been visiting relatives for that time and returned back to yorkshire where he was born and possibly living.
