    Default Private Henry William Phillips

I have found a long lost relative but am having trouble finding birth & death details for certificates. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
Details I have :- Pte. Henry William Phillips, 38151, 9th Bn., Welsh Regiment.
Died 7th July 1916, age 20, Somme, France.
Son of Florence Phillips (my grandmother), of 114, Ifield Rd., West Brompton, London.
Buried Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt. (CWGC)
Born London, enlisted Aberystwyth, residence South Kensington, Middx.. (Soldiers died in the Great War)
I presume that because he died in military service the army would issue the death certificate, how do I go about getting it.
Unfortunately my mother never knew she had a brother, died before she was born, and my grandmother destroyed all her paperwork before she died, so no trails to follow. I know of two sisters, one died in Caterham & the other in an air raid, but no other information.
I would be grateful for any help at all.

You may already have these details Tonyk, but the medals he was entitled to were The 1915 Star, The British War Medal, and The Victory Medal.

On the free BMD sites if you put 1895-1896 for births only two Henry William Phillips appear both for 1896
    March qr Chelsea 1a 387
    June qr Paddington 1a 62

One of these could be your man? not sure which one though. I assume you have looked at the CWGC site.

Thanks all for your help. I have looked at the gro.gov site - still more to do, as with the gro deaths army. I have a copy of the medal card, the CWGC gave the info. that he had the MM. Unfortunately not true. I contacted them to see if they had any more info. but was told that a lot of what they did have was destroyed some time ago.
I have looked at the freeBMD sites, sent off for one of those mentioned (can't remember which one) but it was the wrong person. I have found another one that might fit, but from 1897. This is my problem, I have no real information on him. I am relying on finding other info. such as mothers name and/or an addess so that I can confirm correct person.
My grandmother was in service and moved about a bit. So far I have found about 5 or 6 different addresses for her. My mother was born at a different address from Henry's, and I believe that her two sisters were born at another 2 addresses.
I'm sorry but I am very much an amateur at this and struggling to find out anything.

    Hello

Why not post details of the parents and let us see if we can find them on the 1901 census!

I will try and be as brief as possible but it gets confusing.
My grandmother:- Florence Phillips, B 6th April 1876, Chelsea, London.
My mothers birth certificate states:- mothers name Phillips formally Chandler, father- Charles William Phillips, head porter of 114, Ifield Rd., Kensington. Born at 369, Fulham Rd., Chelsea, SW10.
My mother was always known as Mary Elsie Alice, even at school, but b/cert. only says Elsie Alice. B. 11th Dec. 1918.
My mothers marriage cert. states:- father- Frederick Phillips (deceased).
Mother never knew her father and was told he died before she was born.
I have found what I believe is my grandmothers b/cert., 6th April 1876, 47, Radnor St., Chelsea, Florence Ann, father- Henry William Phillips, mother:- Elizabeth Phillips formally Young, South Chelsea, County of Middx..
Also found what I believe are my two aunts b/certs, neither state fathers name. I think these are right from what I can remember being told.
One was killed in an air raid, North Middx. hospital, Silver St., Edmonton (not proven). The other died in St. Lawrences hospital, Caterham, 21st August 1964 ( have death details from hosp.). Both certs. state:- mothers maiden name Phillips. Tonyk

    Hello

Maybe I am not reading this correctly:

Your mother was Elsie Alice ( aka Mary Elsie Alice) b Dec 1918 registerd q1 1919 Chelsea
The certificate suggests that her mother was PHILLIPS formally CHANDLER

    1) have you found a CHANDLER = PHILLIPS marriage, if so please post details.

    2) How did you find out about Henry William PHILLIPS ( pm me if you prefer)

    3) have you found your family on any census if so can you post a reference.
