    Exclamation Richard Ollerton

I have three "brick walls" to negotiate:

    1) I'm trying to confirm the parents of my great great grandfather Richard Ollerton (b. 1846 in Upholland, UK d. 16/11/1884 Aspull, UK). He married his wife Alice Kenyon on 25th December 1868. I have marriage/death certificates for Richard but cannot confirm who his parents were. One possibility is Richard Ollerton (1805 - 1879) and Esther Langton (1809 - 1901) but I can't find documentary evidence of this and other possibilities seem equally likely. An additional query about Richard, although not geneological, is that I'd like to find out where he worked (as a baker) during his life. His son continued to be a baker after his fathers death but I can't find any record of where they may have worked.

    2) I have also failed to find any record of any military service carried out by Richard or his son Robert William Ollerton (11/11/1870 - 7/7/1948) whol lived in Atherton and the Pemberton near Wigan, Lancashire.

    3) I am also interested in if anyone could help me find out more about my great grandfather William Mark Dandy (b. 28/02/1877 in Wrightington - d. 1949). I'm lead to believe that William (usually known as Mark?) was brought up on a farm near Upholland, Lancashier but was then "adopted" by the Blundell family. (My grandmother's surname was Blundell even though William was her father. Any advice on finding out about his history and possible adoption and again any information on finding his military history (navy / merchant navy according to oral family history) would be wonderful.

    Hi Day26.

In 1881 at the age of 4 years, 'Mark' Dandy is shown as a boarder, in the household of John and Elizabeth Blundle (sic), Farmer and wife of Tunley Lane Wrightington.
Mark's birthplace is shown as Wrightington, and there are also 5 sons and daughters of the 'Blundle' family resident.
Wrightington is about 5 miles from UpHolland.

It's unlikely that you will find any record of Mark being adopted by the Blundell family, asthe adoption procedure was far less formal in those days, and did not require official authorisation.

The marriage below would appear to relate to William and Ellen Ollerton, despite the fact their eldest child on the 1851 census is shown as born circa 1839:-

Marriage: 3 Jan 1842 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
William Ollerton - (X), 36 Husbandman Bachelor of Dalton
Ellen Banks - (X), 32 Spinster of Upholland
    Groom's Father: Richard Ollerton, Husbandman
    Bride's Father: Robert Banks, Delfman
Witness: Ann Gregson; Robert Ollerton, (X)
Married by Banns by: Henry B.Jones

Hazelnut, thanks for your reply. (See my post below with apologies about why it's taken me so long to reply!)

I'm pretty new to researching my family tree and wondered if you'd be kind enough to tell me how you found the second part of the information you posted above? (I can find the first part on the Lancs OPC website) but wondered where you found the details about the address and, particularly how you knew what was next door?

    Many thanks.
