    Default Sir James Young Simpson

I am trying to find any information on Sir James Young Simpson b.1811 in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland and would be very grateful of some help. I am related to him - my Mum always said he was her GGrandfather - but I'm not sure. He had 9 children but I don't know how many of them had children as most of them died very young. Thanks. Julia

Thank you so much for your help noggin. I am trying to find out where my line goes back so have now tried working backwards from Sir James Young Simpson. This is my Mum's side of the family who are now spread out all over the world. My Great Aunt Mary Young (in Australia) wrote a book about their early days called 'Come with Me' as they were a very interesting family. My Mum's parents were Dundas Simpson b.1892 and Julia Lowther b.1898 they divorced when my Mum was little, Mum was sent off to boarding school and wasn't allowed any contact with her Mum who eventually went to live in South Africa. In 1938 Dundas remarried, Ellen Gadd an alcoholic who ruined him, and Mum only ever saw him a few more times. The next generation are Dundas Simpson b.1868 and Mary Lyon b.1867. Then there is either James or John Simpson b.1839 and Margaret Brunton b.1841. Dundas Simpson and Mary Lyon moved around a lot between England and Scotland and each generation had huge families. Dundas ended up leaving the family and went to New Zealand where he died. That's as far as I am at the mo. that I can actually list. Mum always said that Sir James Young Simpson was a relation and my cousin's son in South Africa has his own website on the Simpson family where he mentions that he was named after him.

Hi Julia, I am also related to him! His brother, Dundas, was my Gt Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather. My father and gt uncle look very like his statue in Edinburgh. I am not sure when the Simpsons moved to Northern Ireland. However, my gt gt grandfather helped build the Titanic and my gt grandmother was born here in 1897. Would love to share more family history.
