    Default Julia May Lowther

I have discovered from the 1911 census that my Grandmother named above, at age 13, was an inmate at the London Orphan Asylum (Metropolitan District Imbecile Asylum) Watford. Her mother was still alive as were her older siblings so why would this be? I'm sure my dear old mum never knew. Any help on this would be good. I hope I've put this in the right place this time! Many thanks. Julia Hill

    Hi Julia,

Although I'm unable to answer your query, I thought the extract below from an 1890's Charity Register may be of some help.

See your request on look up forum:

Had she lost her father ? This was one reason why children ended up at the London Orphan Asylum. You may find this site useful. click on archives at the foot of the page for more details.

Surrey History : Exploring Surrey's Past - London Orphan Asylum

I found May Julia Lowther b Southsea, Hants, what was her mothers name?

    London Orphan Asylum
The objects of the charity were to provide relief to destitute orphans, 'to rescue them from the walks of vice and profligacy; to provide them clothing and maintenance; to fix the habits of industry and frugality; to train them in the path of religion and virtue agreeably to the formularies of the Church of England and to place them out in situations where their principles shall not be endangered and the prospect of an honest livelihood shall be secured'. Orphans were defined as children who had lost both parents or their father, with the mother unable to provide for them. It was emphasised from the beginning that children whose parents had been in respectable circumstances had the first claim on the charity.
    (Julia's father was a chemist)

It is a distinct possibility if the Father or Mother had died and financially they could not manage all the Children - one or more of them may have to go away, I notice she was the youngest and therefore probably the most dependant. I think it was like the workhouse really.

Thank you for all of the help. Julia Lowther (born about 1855) was the mother of Julia May Lowther (known as May) born in 1898. I do have some info. as I have just finished the free trial with findmypast but financially cannot continue at the mo. It was a shock for me to discover this about my Grandmother as I was always led to believe they were quite 'well to do'. Thanks again and no doubt I shall need further help.

Can anyone suggest the best genealogy site to sign up for (when I can). Most of my Mum's family (Simpson on her Dad's side) emmigrated after the war - both first and second - to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa - from England - though they were originally Scottish. What would be the best site to go for to have access to all the relevant info. I need?

We cannot recomend any paid sites as this is against T+Cs of Ancestry Aid. Why not post queries on the relevant boards we have wonderfull amateur researchers all over the world who are willing to help members with their research. Best of all it's free!
