    Default Looking for John Humfrey

I am looking for my gggrandfather John Humfrey who married Mary Ann Little. My ggrandfather was born in Bethnal Green in 1847, father John Humfrey, bricklayer and mother Mary Ann Little, according to his birth certificate. I think I have found their marriage in Dec. 1831 in St. Pancras but neither of these records give his age or when he was born. According to my ggrandfathers 1st marriage cert. in 1870 John was deceased and a builder. I may have found him on the 1841 census as a carpenter but not knowing the names of any of his children that were born between 1831 and 1847 I am finding it hard to track him down. I know my ggrandfather William Chapman had a brother as the family in Western Australia mention that he owned a resturaunt in "London" with his brother. William Chapman was a Cook and later had his own farm in Romford, Essex. All the records I have of William Chapman from 1871 until his death in 1937 in Walton-on-the-Naze state that he was born in Cambridge Square (Bethnal Green). I can't even find William Chapman from his birth to 1871, so I am wondering if the family moved somewhere, maybe to India.

    Hello

    For starters

John HUMFREY = Mary Ann LITTLE 15 December 1831 St Pancras Camden, witnesses one likely to be a verger etc as signs on other certificates, the other I am unable to decipher.

    St Leonard Shoreditch

    Rebbecca b 21 Oct 1832 bp 18 Nov 1832 d/o John & Mary HUMFREY Pearson St Bricklayer
    John Fraser b 23 May 1834 bp 10 Aug 1834 d 16 Nov 1834 s/o John & Mary HUMFREY Hoxton Bricklayer
    Mary Ann b 06 Feb 1836 bp 01 pril 1836 d/o John & Mary HUMFREY Hoxton Bricklayer

St John the Evangelist Stanmore Midd'x
Harriett b..............bp 5 Sept 1841 John & Mary HUMFREY Stanmore Bricklayer ( ties in with the 1841 census)

    1841 H107 657 10 Stanmore
    HUMFREY Mary 30
    HUMFREY Rebecca 8
    HUMFREY Mary 5

    In the next entry/property

    HUMFREY Thomas 57
    HUMFREY Elizabeth
    HUMFREY Frederic 15

The John HUMFREY as a carpenter in 1841 I think is likely to be the correct one, his wide and 2 children being in Stanmore

William Chapman HUMFREY appears to have married sisters

Mary GIBBENS in 1869 & Jane GIBBENS in 1882

Hi Elsabels.....This info is very interesting. I think you may have found some reference to them. Will check further on this. I found some info on the IGI re christenings at St. Leonard's Shoreditch but the info doesn't mention the fathers' occupation, so I wasn't sure whether it would have some relevance....it looks like it might have. William Chapman Humfrey married cousins. Mary died a few weeks after giving birth to a daughter in 1881, and William C married Jane, a cousin in 1882. According to William C and Mary's marriage cert. in 1869 John Humfrey was a builder and deceased. Don't know what happened to Mary Ann though..

Hi again Elsabels.....The surname Chapman is interesting.....I often wondered where and how William Chapman received the name Chapman. William is 3 on this 1851 census and that is what is age would have been. If only I could confirm his siblings.......
