Thread: William Porter

I've been struggling for a long time to get further back than:

William Porter, born 1800/1801 in East Meon, Hampshire (according to 1851 Census and also according to his gravestone when he was buried in East Meon after he died in 1880). In 1851 he was a wheelwright in East Meon, married to Charlotte. I believe there were only 2 or 3 other Porter families living in East Meon at the time but I have not been able to find any record of his birth or his marriage to Charlotte which would presumably contain the first name of his father.

Found this on a public tree marriage - William Porter to Charlotte Marsh 12 feb 1833 at Hambledon Hamshire , ive tried freereg no luck.

You mention the 1851 census, have you seen this 1841 H107 396 8

Thankyou for these, I'll have a look into them. The marriage in particular looks very likely to be them. Brilliant! So exciting when you might be able to go even further back!

Hazelnut, can I ask where you found the record on Familysearch.org? I can't replicate the search/results. William was 50 in the 1851 census, 60 in the 1861 census and 70 in the 1871 census and according to his headstone died aged 80 in 1880. So presumably he must have been born between March 1800 and December 1800. If he was christened in July 1801 in East Meon he would have to have been at least 7 months old - would this have been likely at this time as I'm not sure how long the christening would have been left after the birth?
