Can anyone help with my grandfathers war record for the 1914-18 war.
Unfortunately I do not have a service number or photos of him in uniform. I know that he served as a Gunner/private in the Royal Garrison Artillery,as this was on my late fathers birth certificate in december 1918, but on my grandfathers marriage certificate in 1916 his rank/profession was just put as a 'soldier'.
He lived in the Portsmouth area Hampshire, also another problem he had a quite common name being
Ernest James West. He also got mustard gassed, and survived, so I looked up on discharged list on Ancestry, but no luck
I looked up on The National Archives sight, and managed to find in campaign medals several Ernest Wests all listed as gunners, so how do I find if I have got the right one? as the cards do not give much information.
I also did the same for Acommercial site.Co.uk when they had the free search last year, and came up with the same information. How do I get his service record without a service number?
