Hello,
This is my first question - I am stuck on this gentleman.
Charles married Maria Larter 30 November 1823 at Christ Church Spitalfields London. Charles and Maria and family emigrated to Tasmania on William Wise 1841 under the sponsored teacher system.
We can't find Charles' family. He was supposedly under age when he married. Would there be any record any where of his parent(s) consent?
Family lore says that Charles was educated at Cambridge, that his father was John Hall, a knighted senior naval officer, who disinherited Charles when Charles refused to join the Navy.
Charles' father was believed to be staunchly Church of England.
Charles later was supposedly further educated at Homerton College and his mentor was Dr John Pye Smith.
Charles was a teacher from his date of marriage until he emigrated.
No details are known of Charles' mother, who apparently was sympathetic to Charles and provided assistance to him after his father cast him out. Charles had an older brother, but no details are known of that brother.
Sir John Hall was believed to have died (possibly at sea) before Charles' marriage to Maria.
I am not sure any of the family stories are true - but any help with teacher's records, parish records of consent to marriage below age and possible parents would be appreciated.
Thanks
Diane
