Default advice: amendments to birth certificate

i have just obtained a birth certificate where the name of the father has been changed. i am trying to find out what legislation there is or what process would have needed to have taken place for that change to be made.

would there be an official record.

all i have so far is the original certificate with a hand written note on the side saying father not as stated and new fathers name written. the birth certificate has 2 entries recorded under each fathers name when u search transcribes.

any ideas how i would find any paperwork to support this change/ amendment.

    thanks
    lisa

Hi There Lisa, You dont say where the birth took place but if it was in the UK I would contact the GRO (General Records Office) and ask their advice on the matter.

Check this link out click if the person is not living post the details, I know that is can be done, and ususally there is a figure in the area a round the certificate.

One thougth is it the mother of the child who has altered the certificate rather than GRO?

If the person is living then they will need to query, not a third party, if not then it may have to be nearest and dearest, all the laws we now abide by in the UK....

This hand written note it seems a bit strange - who signed it? I am wondering if the Mother married and the groom adopted the person - and applied for a change of name

    Default more info...

the person is living, even though now under a different name. so not happy to post the details on here, I will replace names with an alias.

the written amendment is on the 'official copy' that is held at the GRO, when writing to them they advised they could not elaborate on the comments.

firstly the certificate is listed with same ref number, same first name and 2 seperate surnames (e.g. smith, Fred and Jones, Fred) when you search at the gro or online (freebmd & findmy past etc).

then i applied for the two certificates smith and jones, the reply said one was unavailable and the one they did send had this written note on the side. certificate said father of fred jones was fred jones snr, then note on the side said 'fred jones not father - father listed as fred smith'.

electorial records from the 1930s in that year say fred jones was in household with the mother mary wales (and she would have been 6 months pregnant). I am pretty sure that fred jones is te father and mary the moter, but i wondered if there may be some documentation somewhere asking for this birth certificate to be officially changed or whether the couyrt had to do it, or if anyone could write to the GRO.

i applied seperately for the other one and was sent the same one as the first one with same notes in margin. no covering note !

just wondered how an official document was changed like that.
am thinking i may have to go to the local register office of that district and ask ! lol

this child was then adopted, so no father took them on which is very sad, so dont think it was changed by the father? not sure about the mother? it may have even been the adoption people i guess !

I had one of those amendments written in the margin of the certificate. My great grandmother had 3 children after her husband had been killed in WW1 and had continued to name them in the dead husbands name. She had to make a Statutory Declaration...ie his details had to be omitted from the birth certificate...so I did get in touch with the local registrar but they were unaware of anymore documentation on the matter. It had been suggested that it came to light because she would have been receiving an army pension

I think official alterations would be numbered and signed by the registrar making the changes. I suggest you contact the relevant local register office to see what their register says, as they are supposed to keep separate records of changes.
