    Default Walter Fitzsimons

Not sure whether here or Military board

Chasing Walter Fitzsimons who married Elizabeth Barton nee Tindall 8 Apr 1884 Hackney.Walter was 52,widower and gent. Father shown as Edward Jackson Fitzsimons-gent. The 1901 shows a Walter Fitzsimons of abt the right age born Ireland and widower. Trouble is Elizabeth is alive in 1901 and also shows as widow and using name Barton. Father(?) Edward Jackson Barton shows up in London Gazette 1857-1870 as being with 78 foot and South Lincolnshire Militia. Can not find Walter or father in any census prior to marriage.
I wonder if anyone can find any details re father origons?

    Thanks genie

That is great. So the 1901 Walter Fitzsimons is probably mine even though Elizabeth was still alive.Strange that they both said widow(er).Marriage obviously a mistake.Edward Jackson retired from 78 Foot 31 Mar 1863 and appointed Lieutenant South Lincoln Militia 18 Jan 1870. I wonder where he died?
Question - what happens when military outside country on census day. Are they just missed?

Ordinarily military personnel would be recorded on the census of the area they are in when it is taken - so you may be able to find Edward on 1861 Scottish Census.

Is Edward Jackson 78 Foot the father or possibly a brother. Assuming that Walter was born abt 1830 then his father must have been born no later than 1805/06.The 1857 London Gazette has Edward becoming a lieutenant. The father would be 50+ yrs at that time.

    Hi Ed

Pretty sure that Edward Jackson was the father - he would have been around late 50s early 60s when he married Eleonora and had the 2 further sons - she could of course, have been much younger than him - I have a gg grandfather who left the UK for Canada at the age of 71 married a 30 year old 2 years later and had a son at the age of 80!!!!!!

Turns out that Walter was no gentleman when he married Elizabeth Barton. In 1862 he was convicted of insurance fraud and sentenaced to 18 months with hard labour. In 1874 he was declared bankrupt. Prior to marriage Elizabeth he married Elizabeth Tarrant 1852 Dublin. I would like to find names of children born abt 1854 and 1856 if possible. Not sure whether Dublin or Cork.

    Ed
