Default Captain John Morris 1822 to 1876

I am trying to find information about my great grand parents, John Morris born 1822 & Francis Morris born 1824, they were married and had four children when they moved from St Dogmeals Pembrokeshire to Cardiff Docks in 1855. They then had a further two chidren, two of their sons became Mariners & their father John became a Seaman Chief Officer and Captain, who became a prominant figure in Cardiff Dock life, his wife Francis was also a very active person in Dock life she was a leading member of the Foreshore Despute between local people and the Marquis of Bute who owned the Docks. Every year during that period she would organise the taking down of the Dock Foreshore Gates so that local people would have their righful access to the Foreshore. Both of my great grand parents were very active in dock life between 1860 and 1880. Unfortunatley I cannot find any positive information not even in the Glamorgan achives no information or evidence of their involvment at the time. My great grandfather was a sea Captian- Master Mariner his two Sons Mariners and Pilots and one of their sons William Robert Morris became a Sea Captain & Bristol Channel Pilot he was born 1892 died 1974. I just cannot find any information on these past relations of mine apart from the very basic information on BDM
& the census records, can anyone help in my search.
    Regards Robert Maxwell Morris

Good evening Robert - it makes a change to do some research on home ground.

To begin with I dont know if you have had a look at Sir Winston Churchills Questions in Commons speach of 27 May 1908. They have been listed in Hansard and their was a question raised in the House of Comons on this day on the Foreshore Dispute.

If you look up .......hansard.millbanksystems.com/people/mr-winston-churchill/1908 the details (small) are there

Also at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone. ME14 1XQ . Telephone number: 01622 694 263 there are a number of records concerning the Foreshore Dispute and perhaps if you contacted them they might share information with you. The studies are linked to the University of Exeter.

Have you had a look at the Slaters Directory for 1880 - There is a lot of information about Cardiff in there in general and it may lead you to your family? Ps He is listed under Nobility and Gentry at 10 Park Place if its the right person !

This is a shot in the dark but Cardiff had a seamans hospital...

HOSPITAL FOR SEAMEN OF ALL NATIONS, H. M. Ship Hamadryad,' Old Dock Head- just maybe there are some records of injuries and diseases either in the library or at the New Record Office near the old football stadium. Dont know if you have been there recently? Address is ..

Glamorgan Archives -Clos Parc Morgannwg- Leckwith- CARDIFF - CF11 8AW
    Telephone: (029) 2087 2200
    Email: GlamRO@cardiff.gov.uk

Look under this reference there are details of the dispute...

BRITISH HISTORY ONLINE- Cardiff Council Minutes, 1894-1895

Cardiff Council Minutes: 1894-5', Cardiff Records: volume 5 (1905), pp. 203-219.

I just thought of something else. Cardiff Yesteryear books may have pictures and information. I looked on line for my family and found the book they were in and borrowed it from the library and copied the info. Sadly the author of these died the other day - so I dont know if someone else will carry the job on.

    Dear Robert

The other directories that are in both Cradiff Library and the GRO are the Kelly’s, and Piggots and they cover the years in between census records and post 1901. They may only contain an odd line or so about the occupants residences or work positions but added together with other details can form a helpful timeline.

Do you know the ships names and years that John was in service?

Sea Captains had, and still do have powerful rights in the abscence of a chaplain over births marriages and deaths when at sea. Their word is law and they would have compiled records of those who sailed with them and where they went .

He would have taken exams to gain his position and his mariner record will be in Archives – do you have this information?

Have you been able to trace all the relations to present day?

Do you have Johns family BMD certificates?

Do you know where they are buried – is it possible they are in the Allenbank graveyard in Cathays? This is run by Cardiff City Council and I can let you have the address if you like, as my rellies are there too.

Cardiff Council will have minutes of meetings held at the GRO - it is possble that the Foreshore Dispute came up at some point.

The Duchess of Cornwall and Marquis of Bute records may hold some clues, as this was whom the dispute was with.

Was there a family bible somewhere or did Frances keep any records or diaries of the times she opened the gates and who she let through each night?

Records pre Cardiff may be in the Pembrokeshire record office seing as he was 30+ when he came to Cardiff.

I know that sounds a lot of things to look for but even if you get a few details off each of these it will gain to you a comprehensive time line. I will have another look tonight.

    Hello Robert

Did you know there are 2 family trees on A*******, one appears to be a direct descendent of William Robert MORRIS b 1859 s/o John ( profile suggests they live in Pembrokeshire) the other seems to also have french ancestry!

There is the transcript of a private letter dated 1985 concerning Frances and her activities that is 6.5 ( A4 ) pages in length, there is a suggestion that the family were non conformists and the writer expalins more fully about non conformists and where your ancestors fit into this...he has obviously reviewed the subject extensively and even offers the recipient a meeting to discuss the family more fully!

This letter will go along way in understanding what Frances's involvment was in the dispute

Send me an e mail ( you'll pick it up on my profile page) if you want a copy of the transcript

    Good day Robert

The foreshoe dispute ended with a handwritten judgement sent to both governments. Dated June 10th 1857, If you can get into this record it has all the details but no family names mentioned im afraid.
