I have for many years now been trying to locate the birth of my grandmother. She said that she was born on the 27 July 1875 in Shepherds Bush, her father being a Henry Davis, engineer. I have sent for quite a few birth certificates but to date have not been able to locate her. Any help that you can give me will be much appreciated thank you,

Hi There Winnie, Is there any other information you can share with us about your Grandmother please. Did she have any siblings that you know of and their birth year and place if known...What was her Mothers name? If we can establish where her parents married it might be an indication to where she was born. Have you also found your Grandmother on the Census? If so please post this for us to use so that we might be able to help you further.

If you are looking for the birth entry for Edith Matilda, how do you know her father is supposed to be Henry DAVIS?
There is a 1899 marriage on line of a Joseph J LOCKWOOD = Edith MAtilda DAVIS aged 24 d/o Arthur Thomas DAVIS Lab'r
This Edith DAVIS is desc on the 1901 census as being b 1877 Hackney and at a later date 1877 Bethnall Green!

Do you think she could have been registered Matilda Edith and perhaps just used Edith? are any members of her family on the census? if not could Davis have been transcribed as Davies.gif "(bear)")

cant seem to find the older edith matilda in the census with a father henry
Thank you to everyone who replied re my grandmother Edith Matilda Davis. She is the one who was married to George Henry Eldergill and on her marriage certificate she stated her father was Henry Davis deceased. I knew my grandmother very well and we were always told she was brought up by an Aunt and was an only child!!! Seems highly unlikely in those days. I did find an Edith Davis aged 19 on the 1891 Census in Theydon Bois born Shepherds Bush, living very close to people called "Wade" who she is visiting in the 1901 Census. In the 1881 Census there is an Eda David (age is unclear) living with Wades in Theydon Garnon listed as a scholar and born Harrow Road London. I definitely think there is a connection to the Wades somewhere but so far have not been able to find it. I did notice that the Banns said Hilda but so far no luck there. Anyway if anyone can come up with a suggestion I will be most grateful. Winnie
