Post Please could you help me find my great great great grandparents - Garnett/Johnson

    Dear All
I am a member of ancestry and have come to a dead end on my family tree for the past three years because of the birth certifcate of my great great grandfather - Henry John Garnett, he was born in Long Alley in London in 1860. On his birth certifcate his parents are a tailor and tailoress - Henry John Garnett and Rebecca Garnett nee Johnson. I have looked for a marriage for Henry John Garnett and Rebecca Johnson throughout the 1800's to 1860 with no joy..... The mystery is important to us as we understand that my great great grandfather was illegitmate until we found the birth certificate, he ended up in Wakefield; and was a compositer and met and married my great great grandmother - Fanny Coggin. Your expertise and help would be greatly appreciated. A family mystery would be solved... my tree can be viewed on ancestry - public tree.
    Kind Regards
    Diana

Hello Diana and welcome to Ancestryaid

    I have found 1) Henry John b Oct 1860 living as a boarder with John & Louisa BLACKBURN in 1871 RG10 4319 41 20 Wakefield.

John BLACKBURN married Louisa GARNETT d/o 2) Henry GARNETT Baker 25/12/1851 Middlesex

    2) Henry GARNET snr had a son 3) Henry John GARNETT who appears to have been married in August 1860 to Charlotte EAST.

Could Henry 3) have fathered Henry 1) with Rebecca JOHNSON thus making Henry 1) illeg and this is the reason you find him living with his Aunt Louisa (nee GARNETT )BLACKBURN?

Not sure if you have this

    Saffron Hill Camden
    GARNETT Ann b 30/08/1835
    GARNETT Frederick b 30/07/1837
    GARNETT Rebecca b 12/11/1838
all baptised 14/01/1844 children of Henry & Mary Jemima GARNETT Henry is shown as a Baker

What you see on a birth certificate is only as good as the person who has supplied it!

    Dear esabels, brian and noggins,

Thank you for helping me try to find Henry John Garnett. The information you supplied noggins is perfectly accurate and indeed this is what I base my whole seach on, my great great grandfather was Henry John Garnett born in Long Alley, London in 12/11/1860. He married Fanny Coggan on the 06th January 1883 in the Parish Church in the Parish of Bradford. She was 19 and he was 22, she was a domestic servant and he was a printer compositer. There is no name next to Henry John Garnett's boxes for Father's name and surname and profession. He never knew who his father was and was ashamed that he was illigitamate. Hence we were amazed to find his birth certificate to have Rebecca Johnson and Henry John Garnett as his parents.
We too think that the widow is a likely mother as she too is a tailoress. We also agree that the other Henry John Garnett family (the one that married Charlotte East) could have passed our great great grandfather over to his Aunt to look after, as he ends up in the North of the Country able to meet and marry Fanny, following living with the Blackburns (Louise Blackburn nee Garnett). We just cant seem to find a marriage certificate, we have paid for two marriage certificates including Charlotte East and Henry John Garnett m 1860 / we have a Rosanne Byford and Henry Garnett m 1856??? We just cant see any Rebecca Johnson. How can the widow tailoress - Rebecca Johnson be a widow ie married, when we cant find any marriage certificate for her? In terms of Charlotte East and Henry John Garnett family, they married 09/08/60 and our Henry is born and registered in 1860 (November 10th) same year as they get married? Thank you for your help, this mystery / enigma haunts us, any further help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    Best wishes
    Diana

    Dear esabels, brian and noggins,

Just pulled out Henry John Garnett (our great great grandfather)'s birth certificate again, born 10 November 1860 in 61, Long Alley London, Shoreditch. Registered in Shoreditch. Father - Henry John Garnett and Mother - Rebecca Garnett (formely Johnson) Occupation of father - Tailor and Journeyman. Could you tell us what a journeyman is please? Signature of mother is a cross in box of signature, desciption and informant - with address - 61 Long Alley Shoreditch again. Registration date is a month later 20 Decemember 1860. Registrar is James Alabasta.
So has Rebecca gone to inform them that her son (our Henry John) 's father is Henry John Garnett as oppose to them both? Thus could the gas fitter Henry John Garnett have married twice?
    Thanks again
    Kind Regards
    Diana
