    Default Birth Registration & Baptism?

    Hi All,

In 1868, who would a birth have been registered with? I mean would it have been a vicar or a registrar?

Also, was it common for a woman to have had her child baptised but to not have registered the birth?

    Thanks

    Kathleen

    Hi There Kathleen,
Although state registration started in 1837 it was only made compulsory in 1875 therefore many born between 1837 and 1875 were not registered. Can we help you at all with your search? According to the book of common prayer it was required that a child be Baptised even if their birth was not registered..Believe I am correct with this one but maybe one of our members can verify. The link below may be of some use in answering part of your question.

    Hello Kathleen

I mean would it have been a vicar or a registrar
It would be a person appointed in the area to be the Registrar to act on behalf of The General Registrar of Birth, Marriages and Deaths,

was it common for a woman to have had her child baptised but to not have registered the birth
Up to 1875, yes, it was not a legal requirement to register a birth, most continued to have their child baptised, particularly if there arose a need to claim parish relief!
Reasons for not registering included avoidance of compulsory Vaccination from 1853 and the need to put the child to work at an early age!

Fines for non registration were not imposed until 1875!

    Hi Marion and elsabels,

Thank you both for the info.

I am struggling to find Henry Lane Crawford who was baptised in York in 1868 in the parish of St Lawrence. I think that I will have to resign myself to the fact that his birth probably wasn't registered because he was illegitimate! I have searched with different dates, name variations and so on but to no avail.

    Thank you once again.

    Kind regards

    Kathleen

What was his mother's name? could he have been registered under her name? did he have any siblings? Nothing on FreeBMD apart from one born 1880.
