My great great Grandmother - Maria Austin died at 4 Court Roscommon Street in 1874 aged 33 (she died in childbirth). I understand that court accomodation was often poor quality, but has anyone any idea where this address would be?
Thanks, Maxine

Hi Maxine, this link has some interesting reading on Liverpool court housing,
Liverpool History Society Questions Blog: Liverpool Court Dwellings
A quick look on Google maps shows there is still a Roscommon Street in Liverpool but appears to be devoid of houses.
Thanks, Don, a good link. It was as I thought, very poor accomodation. I'll have to try to find an old map of Liverpool to find the Courts (I presume there will be more than one) on Roscommon Street.
Hi Maxine.
Roscommon Street is still there today, but only with a small amount of modern property standing on it; it was part of one of the many clearances carried out in Liverpool.
It runs west from Netherfield Road South, towards Great Homer Street. At the time your gt gt grandmother lived there, it would probably have consisted of terraced property with intervening alleyways, leading to the courts.
As it happens, my gt gt grandfather was living only four streets away from your ancestor at this time.![]()
Is this map any use Maxine?
25 inches to mile, Liverpool, 1880s.
Thanks, Finbar. The map is great. It's certainly given me an idea of the area as I can see a few "courts" on the map. I will investigate more- I wonder if the courts on that street were numbered rather than named? mmmmm.....interesting! thanks again, Maxine
It did seem to be the practice around Liverpool to number courts rather than name them Maxine - eg Number 1 court ******* Street, etc.
Were your ancestor's of Irish descent. I did wonder if Perhaps there were a lot of Irish people living there and a main port they landed at was Liverpool. Just a thought.

My great, great Grandmother, Maria Austin (nee Eccles) was from Hoylake (Hoose), and her husband John Austin was from Salop in Shrewsbury. These were my dad's side of the family. Funnily enough my mum's side were Irish - from Sligo and Roscommon but came straight to St Helens (via Liverpool port) as far as I know. John Austin was a boatman and later worked as a stageman at George's Landing stage. Maria died in childbirth aged 33 but have no idea what became of John afterwards. They had one child - Annie (my g.Grandmother), but perhaps he had more if he remarried - any ideas how I could look into this? I've tried but not got anywhere as I have no idea of his address etc.
