Another one from me, I'm afraid. I'm trying to focus on specific records in these posts, in the hope I can stay on track a bit better. My other threads have turned up staggering amounts of useful information (for which I'm extremely grateful), but haven't answered the main questions I intended to address. I'm hoping focused questions will help.
So, I'm looking for a birth record for William Short in Coldstream (or very close) in 1838 (or very, very close). Below are two census records which I believe show William and his family. The first eliminates anyone born after the 1841 Scotland census (and most of the contenders), the second shows William with his uncle John Short, and the person I believe to be his mother, Mary Short. At this point I believe William was illegitimate, although his marriage record lists his father as Edward Short, Land Agent. I'm open to the possibility that he wasn't illegitimate, but at this point I don't think it's likely. Edward is probably fictional, or at the very least probably isn't really a Short.
