    Default marriage look up please

Looking for the marriage of john binns. He was born in halifax west yorkshire in approx. 1785.By 1805 he had joined the shropshire 53rd regiment of foot. They set sail for india in that year. His wife Mary went with him,and they had 3 children in India Robert 1808,Ellen 1811 and john 1812. I have been searching for their marriage but can find no record of it in Halifax or India. I am now wondering if he married in Shropshire ,maybe Shrewsbury. Would it be possible for someone to check parish records for me? Been looking for this info a long time.
    Thanks

    Hello Teek10!

From what you have said, John Binns married Mary in the UK before travelling to India.

I have looked at Family Search https://www.familysearch.org/s/searc...ary&spouseLast=

for marriages between 1800 - 1805 (see above link which hopefully works!). Found the following:

    John Binns &
1803 Mary Smawden - Kildwich Yorkshire
1804 Mary Soweden - Calverly West Riding, Yorkshire
1805 Mary Sutcliffe - Haworth, Yorkshire

I have also looked at the kids (you may already have done so!) but only found 1851 living Mill Lane, Hipperholme, West Brighouse - H0107 2297 424 35

John Binns - born India British Subject - widower born 1812
    Margaret - dau 15 b Yorkshire
    Morton 14 ditto
    Charles 12 ditto
    Lydia 9 ditto
    Martha 7 ditto
    Sarah A 5 ditto
    Jim 3 ditto
    Thomas 6 ditto

I suggest that you post on Shrops/Shreswbury re potential marriages.

Also post on whatever Forum (don't know enough of this site!) is specific to incoming/outgoing travel on ships passengers! Hopefully the mods can advise you on this.

You could also track the above John Binns on future census in case he is yours and one of his parents appears on it in the future!!

    Hello elsabels,
It says so on one of his childrens baptism records i got from india office. Another mystery is the fact that he must have returned to england by 1818,because his 4th child was born in halifax then. But the shropshire 53rd were in India til 1825.
    Thanks,Trevor

Just found some more info about John Binns. He probably joined the shropshire 53rd in Halifax in Jan 1804,while they were stationed there. From there they went to carlisle, where the military chapel was st Marys Church, another possible marriage venue. From there they went to canterbury then portsmouth. They set sail for india in April 1805.

    Hello Trevor
carlisle, where the military chapel was st Marys Church,
Have a look at the CFHS site, I am sure they will have a transcriptof the church records cumbriafhs.com
not sure whether you can post as a guest or whether you need to register ( I have been a member since 1980)

Have you seen this on wilki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/53rd_(Shropshire)_Regiment_of_Foot
If your John Binns wore the uniform he must hav looked quite dashing!

Another source for information is books.google.co.uk type in the 53rd regiment and see what comes up.

Also the London-gazette, the Governments official newspaper which may carry battle reports etc, you never know you may find the name John BINNS london-gazette.co.uk

Somewhere I have read that these soldiers were in 2 units and when one was abroad the other was at home. As you realise i only picked up the thread part way through so need to revisit to see what else I can glean!
