    Exclamation MOSES BLAIR

I would like to find the whereabouts of MOSES BLAIR in 1841. His wife, Ann, and some of his children were in the Chesterfield district of Derbyshire but there is no sign of Moses. He was born in Ireland c1796, possibly Co Tyrone and is not the Moses Blore/Bloor born at about the same time who is in Staffordshire - I have investigated this.

Moses was married in YKS Halifax in 1819, then moved to NTH Cottingham where three children were baptized, then going possibly to Derby before coming to Chesterfield. I have him on Census in Chesterfield district from 1851 - 1881. He died in 1881 aged 85 shortly after the census was taken.

    Hi Brunobel!

I have spent a few sessions looking for your Moses but to no avail, I am afraid! I saw his wife and the kids on 1841, as you said. He could have gone home to Ireland I suppose but also, you know how it is, some familes (or members of a family) just disappear for a census or two, for whatever reason!

Hoefully someone else will spot him.

Hi Brunobel- i have been looking at this for a couple of days -the nearest I have found is their son Robert born in Cottingham and christened 6 Aug 1820 Index 104599-2 source 1990189- parents Moses and Anne. I am suspecting if they were in Ireland for the 1841 census as I cant seem to find them either - in fact there are only 2 Williams and 1 Susan Blair on that census. I tried searching with just Moses with and without Tyrone so I think the looking has to change country? Sorry I cant be more helpful for the mo but I wil lendevour to search Tyrone if if I can find some transcripts

Hi Bruno- well I found an irish census site and it reverted to FMP site - there I found in 1841 Ann Blair b 1796 living in Poole and Anne Blair living in Sunderland. Perhaps someone with a subscription could have a look to clarify the birthplace?

Thank you all for your efforts on my behalf - much appreciated. Ann and children were definitely in Chesterfield in 1841 but without Moses who as you suggest may have been in Ireland for some reason. I have been in touch with several other researchers and none of them have found Moses in that census. I have been through the 1841 census on FMP just entering Moses and a birthdate with a wide span of years and found nothing resembling any spelling variation of Blair. He remained in the Chesterfield area until his death in 1881 and was quite a character being well known to the local Constabulary. His various occupations included Herbal Doctor, Herbalist, Pot Hawker, Tripe sellar and on one census - Pauper. In the banns register he was originally styled Quack Traveller but that had been struck through and Yeoman substituted and this was given in the Marriage register also. Wishful thinking I suspect - he was no more a Yeoman than I am.

Yet another Brick Wall I'm afraid.

    Hi Brunobel,

Haven’t yet located Moses in 1841 either, but as you mention he appears to have been quite a character and very well known to the local constabulary – perhaps he was simply “keeping his head down” when the census was taken – I have found a few news reports mentioning him from about 1836 onwards – I wondered if you had these or whether you would like me to post some transcriptions for you.

He sounds like he was an interesting character - best check the local police cells for 1841!

Quack Traveller! What a great description! An entrepreneur that is for sure!

    TOWN HALL

Thursday – Before the Mayor & S. Butcher Esq.,

Moses Blair was charged with disorderly conduct, at the house of Joseph Green, beerhouse keeper, Hawley croft. The defendant went to the house, professing to be a sort of doctor. He offered to feel the pulses of the company, and volunteered to pull out a tooth for any man, blindfolded. He made himself so obnoxious, that he was turned out. He then broke the window. Green was bringing him to the Town-Hall, when he broke his stick upon Green and tore to rags his shirt and waistcoat. White, policeman, took him in charge, and was thrown down by him. In the lock-up, he knocked furiously at the door …. The defendant admitted that he was of an awkward temper, when in liquor. He did a little in the medical line, but had no need for a license, as he was in practise before the Battle of Waterloo. Fined 20s for the assault, and committed for a month in default of payment.
