Hello,
My brickwall concerns the following:
My grandfather ERNEST HAMILTON WILLIAMS was born on 2nd January 1885 at 67 Brighton Road, South Hornsey, Middlesex.
His parents were ERNEST ALFRED WILLIAMS and ANNIE KANE HAMILTON. This couple was married at Holy Trinity, Dalston, Hackney on April 27th 1884. Annie’s age is given as 16, giving a birth year of 1867/8, consistent with the age given in each census. The 1891 census states that she was born in Holloway, London and I know that in 1881 Ernest was living and working in Liverpool so where did they meet?
The family can be found on the censuses of 1891 and 1901. Ernest and Annie’s first son was named Ernest Hamilton Williams, mother’s name Annie Williams formerly Hamilton. The second son was named Percy Kane Williams, mother’s name Annie Williams formerly Kane.
The marriage certificate gives her father’s name as THOMAS HENRY KANE HAMILTON, a solicitor. The address from which she was married was13 Lenthall Rd, Hackney. I checked the census of 1881, 3 years before the marriage and found no Hamiltons at this address. However one of the two families living there is headed by Arthur Browne, a solicitor’s bill clerk.
One of the witnesses at the wedding was ELIZA HAMILTON who can also be seen on the censuses of 1891 and 1901 living with the Williams family (shown as Eliza A Hamilton). In 1891 she is shown as aunt and in 1901 as grandmother to wife. Her age is given as 60 and 70 and her birthplace as Hackney. She was a widow.
In the census for 1911, Eliza Hamilton appears to have become Eliza McGill!
On the death certificate for Eliza A Hamilton she is shown as grandmother to Annie Williams who was the informant of the death. The certificate says she was the widow of ___Hamilton, Actor. The certificate also reveals that the A was for Ann. Her age at death was consistent with the ages given in the censuses and indicates a birth date of around 1830. This implies, if she was indeed Annie’s grandmother, and if Annie was born in 1867, that she was a grandmother by the age of 37.
I can find no trace of Annie, Thomas Henry or Eliza A before the wedding in 1884. Please can you help?
Possible red herrings are:
* Census entry 1881 for Eliza A Hamilton and Annie ?Kane, transcribed by Ancestry as Keene. This shows Eliza, possibly a, Hamilton widow aged 46 born Islington with Annie possibly Kane/Keene niece aged 15 born St Pancras. They are living at 81 Devonshire Road, Upper Holloway.
* IGI entry for marriage of Eliza ADELAIDE BURNELL and JOSEPH HAMILTON on 20 March 1852 at St Pancras Old Church. (Mar 1852 St Pancras 1B 124)
* Entry found in A******* for Thomas Henry Kane, solicitor in Dublin, 1881.
Hoping you can do better than I have!
Chris
